The eighteen member Board of Directors and organization members whole heartedly endorse the enclosed Ethel Hedgeman Lyle stamp application. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) is an international service organization founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle spearheaded the founding and the formation of the organization. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American college-educated women. Alpha Kappa Alpha is comprised of nearly 300,000 members in more than 1,000 graduate and undergraduate chapters in the United States, Liberia, the Bahamas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Germany, South Korea, Bermuda, Japan, Canada, the Middle East and South Africa. The Sorority is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and oversees the operations of two charitable foundations, the Educational Advancement Foundation and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Housing Foundation. Nearly 110 years after its founding, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority continues its commitment to be of Service to All Mankind. Since 2014, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has served more than 8.5 million meals to those in need, distributed more than half a million backpacks to students, donated $6.6 million in donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), restored more than 1,500 playgrounds around the world, gave nearly 500,000 seasonal wraps to children and women in need, and actively engage 23,000 high school boys and girls annually through the organization’s ASCEND Youth Enrichment Program. Also, the organization is an active participant in civil rights and racial and gender equality matters that continue to plague our global community. It is with a servant heart and an unwavering commitment to making a difference that the sororities nearly 300,000 members donate millions of hours of service annually to live out Lyle’s mission for a prosperous, safe, and just world. Enclosed in the application is a narrative outlining Ethel Hedgeman Lyle’s stature, resilience and steadfast commitment to service. Also, letters of endorsement from political officials and more than 110,000 signatures in support of the stamp is included with this submission.
