Scary Voices! Matthew 16:21-23
Intro: I. Jesus Speaks (Very Specifically) vs. 21 II. Peter Reacts (Very Emotionally) vs. 22 Why does Peter respond like this? Limited Information Misguided Anticipation Inflated Imagination Human Explanation III. Jesus Responds (Very Unexpectedly) vs. 23 Why does Jesus respond like this? It directly contradicts the Word of God. It was completely contrary to the will of God. It was an appeal to the flesh. It was exactly what Satan had suggested in the wilderness temptation. (Matthew 4:1-11) It would have completely short-circuited God’s plan of salvation and Christ’s very purpose. It would have been a great victory for Satan. Conclusion/Application: 1. It matters to whom you listen! 2. Expect to hear well-intentioned, misinformed voices giving misguided information. 3. The will of God for my life is never contrary to the Word of God. 4. The will of God is not always comfortable. 5. The way of the cross for salvation is the only way of salvation.
