4/3/2017 - It was another light sports week here at Avon High School, with rain (and now sun) cooperating to melt our snow-covered fields. Coaches and teams continue their resourceful, creative efforts to get ready for their first contests which begin this week. The (very full) two-week schedule appears below, as well as a complete listing of coaches, captains and Booster Club team reps (later in the issue). There will be no Booster Bulletin next Monday, April 10th, due to the spring break, but we will return on Monday, April 17th with lots of (hopefully good) news to report. We wish all families a restful and happy holiday break, and all athletes a strong and safe start to the spring season. GO FALCONS! SRDavey, President
For the week of 3/27 - 3/31 There are no scores to report this week as last week’s competitions were all scrimmages. Stay tuned as official games kick off next week!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT : Ultimate Frisbee
Club sports are somewhat of a rarity at Avon High School, however, Ultimate Frisbee is one that has garnered a lot of attention the past few years. Many Avon athletes have flocked from other spring sports to join the Ultimate team, resulting in a bigger roster than the team has ever had. This makes things interesting, as the team has only the Varsity level available. Co-captain Jake Schwarzhaupt likes the Varsity-only team because it allows them to act as one unit, rather than separate groups. In addition to being a strictly Varsity team, Ultimate is co-ed, which adds to the inclusiveness and the fun. Another unique fact about Ultimate Frisbee: there are no referees. The players settle calls themselves, which helps them learn honesty and respect. Schwarzhaupt says he first got into Ultimate by playing with friends at camp in a very informal setting. He understands that it’s not as popular as the traditional varsity sports, but that doesn’t mean Ultimate lacks the intensity or camaraderie of other sports. Avon’s Ultimate team plays in the Division II with mostly private schools from around the state. Their season typically has around 16 regular games and 3 tournaments, including States - a schedule similar to other AHS spring teams. And, rivalling some of Avon’s more successful teams, the Ultimate Frisbee crew won a state championship and a third place finish in just the past two years. Schwarzhaupt says the team is looking to build off their momentum and make a run another run at states, despite losing some leading players from last year. His goal for this season? “To win states of course,” he says with a grin. “We have to rebuild fast and train to get there, but it’s possible.” The team plays their first match today at 3:30 on their ‘home’ field around the corner at Thompson Brook School. Come cheer them on! - or, better yet, join the fun (and the team) by contacting Jake or Coach Jim Murray.
ATTENTION SENIOR-ATHLETES: As you make your final post-high school plans, don’t forget to apply for scholarships available through Avon High School! The Booster Club funds and awards many scholarships every year. These include four “Named” scholarships, in honor of fallen Falcons Dick Migli, Ali Hunter and Robby Brisco, and multiple “General” scholarships awarded to students based on their participation and success in AHS Athletics. Applications for all Booster Club scholarships are available through the School Messenger alerts sent out by Guidance, in hard copy form at the main office, and here on our website. Note: students are welcome to apply for more than one scholarship. Questions? Contact Mrs. Davey at

FEMALE ATHLETES … DO YOU KNOW?
One of the most effective ways to fend off an aggressor is by using your own physical force. Yet, as strong as you are, most of you don’t know basic self-defense moves or tactics. Well, now you can learn them. Project Graduation and WAVE (Women Against Violence Everywhere) is offering a Women’s Self Defense Class for AHS students (and family or friends) on Tuesday April 18th in the gym. Come learn potentially life-saving skills while supporting Project Graduation. Additional information and registration details are contained in the flyer below.
While we’re on the topic of of self defense, parents should know that Avon students (middle through high school) will be introduced to The Safe Student Initiative, a sexual violence prevention program, over the next year. In partnership with the Jane Doe No More organization, Avon schools will host age-appropriate interactive school programs that teach awareness and avoidance of sexual violence, in compliance with Title IX and Erin’s Law standards. Parents and guardians of AMS and AHS students are encouraged to attend an information meeting this Wednesday, April 5th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the AHS auditorium, to learn about student programming that will begin next month. For more information about the Jane Doe No More organization, click here.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The Booster Club seeks a team representative for the Softball team. Team reps function as the liaison between the team, coach, and Booster Club. Time commitment is minimum and no experience is necessary. Interested? Please contact Susie Downey, Booster Club Vice President of Volunteers at
[email protected] Every Wednesday during all lunch periods, the Booster Club sells Spirit Wear to students and staff outside the AHS cafeteria and we need parents to man the table. NO experience necessary! If you can help on any upcoming Wednesday, please contact Nicole Leavens at

ANNOUNCEMENTS The 24th annual Richard Migli Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, May 15th at the Golf Club of Avon hosted by The Booster Club and tournament chair, Steve Hahn. All money raised from the tournament funds scholarships and valuable resources and programs (like the capital items we just voted to fund!) for Avon’s athletic teams. All Falcon parents are welcome and encouraged to participate as golfer (18 or 9 holes), diner (for dinner), or donor.
