Schines History How we got here! 

The CCAC purchased the historic Schines Theater in 1997  1997 - When the Schines Theater was purchased there were large holes in the roof over the stage. The roof had been leaking for approximately 10 years. This was the start of the plaster ceiling and wall deterioration.  1998 - State grants were received and the roof was repaired. The masonry on the front of the building was repaired to protect the building.  2004 - State and Federal grants were received for main lobby, ticket booth and electrical service upgrades.  2005-2015 – Since 2004, the CCAC board has been working to find grants to restore the historic theater. It has been challenging to find grants for this type of restoration. The CCAC has had a few independent engineering firms test for hazardous materials, which were found to be present (asbestos, lead paint).  2016 – The CCAC added additional board members to re-energize our efforts.  2017 – The CCAC realized the best way to move the project forward is to look for a developer/partner, which is how we became involved with Bowers Development. Bowers Development brings the skill set we need to move the restoration of the project forward. They have performed project in historical building, removed hazardous materials and worked with all the state agencies. We believe this is a good fit for our restoration efforts.

Where we are now.

Partnership contracts are being worked on now. Schines Theater, LLC, by Bowers Development. A formal submission for the preservation/renovation project has been submitted and approved by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). We have been working with the NYS Parks, Recreation Preservation agency to help clean up some existing covenants from previous grants. The City of Auburn has agreed to providing $800K from a CDBG Grant for the asbestos abetment portion of the project. The asbestos remediation has begun!
