Scholarship Application The Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach, Florida www.wpbkiwanis.com The Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach was chartered on August 21, 1921, just six years after the founding of the first Kiwanis Club in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout its history, the club has provided assistance to the educational and health needs of Palm Beach County’s young people, raising over $2.5 million to improve the quality of life for deserving children throughout our community.
The Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach Foundation, Inc. The Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach Foundation is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit corporation established on September 28, 1966. The Foundation’s articles of incorporation state that its purpose is to promote “...the benefit of persons residing in and around Palm Beach County, Florida in connection with their health, education and/or welfare.” The Foundation has continued its efforts as a result of generous endowments and contributions. To date, over 700 students have benefited through scholarship grants. The Foundation is pleased to continue this work, thus reinforcing its motto – “Promoting Excellence Through Education.”
Kiwanis What It is: A worldwide service organization for individuals desiring personal involvement in the leadership and improvement of their communities. Where It is: In the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Far East, Southwest Pacific and Europe, a total of 90 nations. What It Does: Performs community service; assists the aging, the needy and youth; improves communities; encourages international understanding. The Name: From the Indian words “Num Keewani ,” which means, “Self Expression.” The Motto: “Serving the Children of the World.”
Promoting Excellence Through Education The Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach Foundation, Inc. offers one of the largest scholarship programs in Florida awarding over $200,000 per year. The Foundation has distributed more than $3.4 million in scholarships since 1966. Each scholarship is renewable for all 4 years of college provided the student reapplies each year and maintains minimum requirements. The total value of the grant, if renewed, is between $10,000 to $16,000 over 4 years. The Foundation is committed to academic excellence. The goal is to help students who carry at least a 3.0 grade point average; have demonstrated good citizenship and community responsibility; and who have financial need. Generally, family income over $75,000 will reduce your chances of receiving a scholarship award. Copies of parents’ and students’ income tax returns are mandatory as is a current tax bill or property tax assessment. Awards vary in size depending on the cost of the school and the student’s financial need, but generally range from $2,500 to $4,000 annually. All grants are made without discrimination as to age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or disability. To be eligible, students must plan to attend college full-time. High school students must currently live AND attend a high school in the geographic area described as north to PGA Boulevard, west to the Glades and south to Hypoluxo Road. How to apply . . . Freshman or First Time Undergraduate Applicants The following documents must be received for you to be considered: 1. Completed Application. 2. General Statement/Essay. Please attach a separate essay describing you personally as a prospective college student and a future member of your community. Your essay should include the following points, if applicable: a) Scholastic interests, activities, and accomplishments in high school. b) Extracurricular school activities including sports. c) List and provide details of all leadership and volunteer activities. d) Why do you wish to go to college? What are your objectives? e) What do you intend to do after college? f) Why did you choose the college to which you are applying? 3. Transcript requirements: Official and sealed transcripts of high school grades (seven semesters) including SAT/ ACT test score. If you are already enrolled in college, send official and sealed transcripts of college grades to date. 4. Copy of your current Income Tax Return (if applicable). 5. Copy of your parents’ or guardian’s latest Income Tax Return. 6. If your parents or guardians are homeowners please submit a copy of their current tax bill or property tax assessment. 7. Documents you submit must be legible and suitable for copying. TYPE OR PRINT LEGIBLY IN BLACK INK 8. Do not use staples. Do not bind application packets. 9. Submit one completed application packet. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2018. You may attach other information you believe would be of assistance to the Kiwanis Foundation in acting on your application. Application and ALL application material must be submitted at one time including transcript(s) to be accepted for consideration.
Returning Recipients & Graduate Applicants Foundation scholarships are renewable provided you make application each year and remain in good academic standing. The following documents must be received for you to be considered: 1. Completed Application. 2. Transcript requirements: If you have not already done so, include the most recent, official and sealed grade transcripts. 3. Copy of your latest Income Tax Return (if applicable). 4.
