About the Scholarship Norman Markland is a 2002 graduate from Lawton Senior High School. He grew up in a single parent household on the north side of Lawton, Oklahoma. Through involvement in extracurricular activities and mentors, Norman was afforded the opportunity to graduate from Lawton High School and attend the University of Central Oklahoma where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. Norman then went on to receive a Master’s degree in Adult & Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Norman is seeking a second Masters in Counseling Rehabilitation from the Langston University. This scholarship is designed as an investment in the future growth, development, and well-being of an African American male who graduates from Lawton High School with the aspirations to attend post secondary education. According to the Schott Foundation for Public Education, black males remain at the bottom of a four-year high school graduation rates. This fact only continues to provide evidence of the economic, community and systemic barriers impacting black males in today’s society. This scholarship is to encourage black male academic achievement as well as foster black male acceptance and enrollment into institutions of higher education.

Eligibility Applicants must • Applicants must be of African American decent • Applicants must be graduating from Lawton Senior High School senior who meet the entrance requirement for an accredited college or university. • Applicants must have a 3.0 G.P. A or higher • Applicants must submit a completed application emailed or scanned to [email protected]. by the appointment deadline. • Applicants meeting the above criteria will be eligible to receive the scholarship.

How to Apply Along with a completed Markland Motivate scholarship application, please provide the following; • One page letter of statement answering the essay question. • One letter of Recommendation from a school leader. • Copy of transcript and ACT/SAT scores. • Current student resume with summary of student’s achievement, community involvement and extracurricular activities. • Please submit application scanned materials to [email protected] or mailed to Markland Motivates Scholarship Fund at 608 S.E. 61st Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73149.

When to Apply •

Apply now. Complete scholarship applications must be completed emailed or turned into your High School Guidance Counselor no later Friday April 6, 2018.

Scholarship application will be reviewed by a selected scholarship committee. The Scholarship will be paid for the benefit and use of the applicant directly to the college or university where the applicant has been accepted as a student or where the applicant attending classes. Norman Markland will recognize recipients at their school on awards day or at graduation if schedules permit. The Markland Motivates scholarship committee has a right to terminate the scholarship if the recipient fails to utilize the scholarship funds within one year of notification.
