School Direct (Primary and Early Years) The University of Nottingham is a training provider for School Direct (tuition fee) with places in a number of partnership schools. The course has 100% employment rate. The programme offers the opportunity to work with small groups of beginning teachers who support each other through the training year and beyond. This School Direct course awards the University of Nottingham PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status with up to 60 Masters credits (that can contribute to an MA Education degree).

All our Initial Teacher Training courses are highly rated locally and many of our students go on to work in partner schools each year. Ofsted judged the School Direct course to be outstanding, identifying a key strength as: ‘The very strong integration of theory and practice, informed by the most up-to-date and relevant research, enabling trainees to gain an in-depth understanding of the latest developments in education and in their subject areas. This provides trainees with an exceptional introduction to the teaching profession and encourages them to use this understanding to enhance their teaching practice.’ Ofsted 2014.

Course Structure

The course begins at the end of August with two induction days at the University. You will follow your school calendar and the timetable at the University, working in school four days per week throughout the whole school year. Each Friday you will attend the University to learn as part of a professional cohort of beginning teachers. You will also complete a paired placement that promotes collaborative learning in a second school.Additionally you will have the opportunity to undertake placements in a range of educational settings. The fact that we offer both primary and secondary courses allows opportunities for crossphase working. We advise all applicants to gain experience in a UK school prior to interview.

Entry requirements

All applicants are required on entry to hold a UK degree or equivalent qualification. Other requirements: in addition you must hold English Language, Maths and Science at GCSE - grade C or above. Applicants must also have obtained their GCSE certificates prior to submitting their application. Professional skills test: you should pass the tests by 1 June in the year in which you aim to start the course. You are advised to register and take these tests at the earliest opportunity in the year of your application. Additionally: admission to the course is subject to a satisfactory medical report as you are required to meet the standards of ‘Fitness to teach’.

Fees and Finance

School Direct (tuition fee): • the tuition fee for this route is £9,000 • if you meet the student funding requirements you are eligible to apply for a fee loan through the Student Loan Company (SLC) • you may be eligible for a bursary, depending on your subject and degree classification - visit the Department for Education website for further information - http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/ funding/postgraduate-funding

Applications are accepted through the UCAS Teacher Training website. http://www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/teacher-training You should follow the advice and guidance on this web site. You may apply for up to three places on any ITT course. Your application will come to the University of Nottingham and will be screened. You will be informed whether you will be invited for an interview. If you are invited for, and are successful at, interview the school you have applied to will decide whether to invite you for a school-based interview. If successful at this interview, you will be offered a place on this course. You will need to formally accept the offer of a place.
