School Uniform Policy Background The Welsh Government states the Governing Body can specify a uniform which pupils are required to wear and other rules relating to appearance as part of its responsibility for conduct of the school. The School Uniform Policy has the following aims:• • • • • • • • •
provide a sense of identity and cohesion within the school and instils pride in its achievements; can support positive behaviour and school discipline; can ensure pupils dress appropriately for learning activity; can remove peer pressure to dress in „designer‟ fashions; can enable pupils of all backgrounds to share in a common identity which embraces their particular requirements; can help reduce inequalities between pupils and some triggers for bullying; can help identify truants; can assist identification of strangers on school premises; and can support and promote the ethos of the school.
Cost of Uniform In formulating this policy, the Governors have given consideration to the cost of uniform. For this reason, the school sells certain items of uniform at cost price. Other items such as black trousers, white shirts and black shoes may be obtained at any retail outlet by parents.

Sixth Form Uniform Part of the ethos of the Sixth Form is that it should operate in a similar style to a place of work. It will therefore help to prepare students for future employment. Although most employers do not require employees to wear a uniform they do expect certain standards of dress. There are many reasons for this but the majority deal with how the image and perception of a company is viewed by potential employees, investors and the media through the appearance of its staff. The same is true of the Sixth Form. As Sixth Formers, students are expected to take on special responsibilities within the school. This presents the individual with opportunities for personal development, which complements academic studies. One area of responsibility in which all Sixth Formers are expected to participate is to actively set a good example to the lower school in their appearance. Students should aim for the “smart office” look which is practical, comfortable and business like. Non Uniform Days Occasional days are designated “non-uniform” days. Students will be charged a standard amount for the privilege of attending school not dressed in regular school uniform. The proceeds from these days will either go to a school fund or a charitable cause.
Sanctions Finally, the Head may discipline students for breach of the Uniform Policy of Duffryn High School. Sanctions will not include exclusion except where the breach is part of a pattern of defiant behaviour. If a student is not adhering to the uniform policy, the school will first of all try to establish the reason why. The student may be sent home to change. The school will make every effort to ensure that no students at the school are made to feel uncomfortable or discriminated against because their parents are unable to provide them with any items required by this policy. A hardship fund is available for these instances and will be discretely managed. Students will not be disciplined for non-compliance with the uniform policy which results from them having to adhere to a particular cultural, racial or religious dress code.
