Scorekeeper Position You are the official scorekeeper for the game, so it is important to be objective and impartial. Your primary interaction will be with the field officials, your table timer, and your spotters, and you occasionally respond to game related questions from coaches. Refrain from making any comments regarding game play, and ask officials to intervene if you are unnecessarily distracted by outside influence. This is the position for volunteers who want to take the game experience one step further. At field level you can sense the ups and downs and emotions of each team as the game progresses. The field level experience is far more engaging than the stands. Long before game time, thoroughly read through these guidelines and be familiar with the attached score sheet and official hand signals. PRE-GAME PREPARATION: •
Arrive at least ½ hour before game time to setup. Collect team rosters, confer with officials, etc. If you rush this position, you will find it difficult to stay on top during the game.
•
Set up your table. Have score sheets, pens/pencils with erasers, air horn (test), field paint, and tape (wind control) all nearby. Be prepared for cold weather, wind, rain, etc. Have plastic cover for score sheet, waterproof pens, canopy, and flip scorer if used – all at your disposal and as conditions dictate.
•
Enter team names under Home Team / Visiting Team sides of the score sheet. Enter Sideline Manager (get from coaches). Enter Scorekeeper Name, Timekeeper Name, Date, and Field Location. Indicate Run/Stop time and enter Time per Quarter. The officials will complete the other information at the bottom prior to or immediately after the game (make sure they do).
•
Get Home Team and Visiting Team rosters from each team coach. Enter the 1st names on the rosters in the 1st entry on the respective sides of the score sheet (“In Home” player): Jersey number, 1st initial first name, last name (note: In Home player takes penalty time if a coach gets called with a penalty).
•
Proceed entering remaining players on score sheet the same way by (ideally) position and sequentially by jersey number – at minimum enter sequentially by number for quick reference later. Goalies always go on the bottom. If a player plays goalie and another position, enter that player twice - once among the other positions and again below as goalie.
•
Introduce yourself and confer with officials to see if they have any special requirements. Also get the cell number of your scoreboard operator up in the announcer box so you (more likely your spotters) can communicate any issues. Sometimes you are privy to score changes by officials that the scoreboard operator cannot know about unless you communicate. Turn Over
Table personnel are neutral. No comments to players, either coach or officials regarding play. If there is an issue with a coach or player, ask the officials to intervene.
GAME TIME: •
Goal Scored: o At the top of the score sheet and sequentially per team left to right (do not skip cells), enter time on game clock and the number of the player who scored and number of the player who assisted, if applicable. Make sure you score the correct team. Ask your spotters or even the coach for help if needed. They often know who assisted as that stat is more difficult to track. You will learn how to ID an assist over time. o In the middle of the score sheet put a tick mark in the period box across from the player who scored the goal and enter a tick mark in the Assist column across from the player who provided the assist, if applicable. o Check the scoreboard (or flip scorer) to make sure it is accurate. It’s a good idea to get the cell number of your scoreboard operator so you can communicate any issues.
•
Penalty: o You do not enter penalty information in the Penalties Column across from the player’s name - you enter sequentially from top down. Your timer will help with penalties. o For the penalized team, enter the Period (Per), Player No., penalty (official will tell you), the penalty minutes (again, official will tell you), and the time on the game clock when the penalty was called. o Inform officials when any player has 5 penalties or 5 minutes of personal foul time.
•
Goal Saved: o Put a tick mark in the period and across from the name of the respective goalie. Ask the question if you are not sure whether it was a save or not (goalie must stop or deflect a shot that would have been a goal otherwise.
•
Time Out: o Two time-outs per team per half. In OT, each team gets one time out per OT period. Record in the lower right section of the score sheet. Enter time on game clock and inform officials if a team has exceeded their allotted time outs.
•
End of Period: o At the top of the score sheet, mark a vertical line to the right of the last goal scored for each team. o Tally and enter the total goals and saves for each team at the bottom of middle section of the score sheet. Match with the information in the top of the score sheet to verify accuracy.
POST GAME o Tally the total score in the top section of the score sheet in the far right corner. o Ensure officials sign the score sheet. Hand yellow copy of score sheet to visiting team coach and original white copy to home team coach.
Table personnel are neutral. No comments to players, either coach or officials regarding play. If there is an issue with a coach or player, ask the officials to intervene.
