Scrappy Irish Runner A versatile pattern that is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day. No Irish luck needed... just your favorite shades of green to play nicely with a solid or textural background. Options abound — Not feeling Irish? Stitch one up with the brightest new floral fabrics you can find and your table will be refreshed for the much anticipated arrival of spring!

Supplies needed — 42" wide fabric • 1 yard background fabric • scraps of 10 different green quilting cottons (at least 4" x 12") • backing — 5/8 yard • binding — 1/3 yard

Cut — read all directions before beginning Green scraps — cut 2 strips of each green fabric 12" x 1.75" Background: cut 20 strips 12" x 1.75" cut 10 squares 5" x 5" cut 8 squares 5.5" x 5.5", then cut in half diagonally

Directions — all seams are 1/4"

1. Arrange stacks of strips in this order: background, green, green, background

approximately 20" x 40"

2. Stitch strips, right sides together (RST) to create a block that is 12" x 5.5". You will have 10 rectangular blocks. 3. Press seams open, using starch or other pressing spray to give some added stability. 4. Trim one end of the block to strighten, being careful to keep the cutting line perpendicular to your seam lines.

5. Cut into two 5.5" squares. 6. Cut these squares diagonally in opposite directions (top right to bottom left, and bottom right to top left) as shown in Diagram 1. You will have four triangles from each fabric combination.

7. Arrange as shown in Diagram 2, matching fabrics to create a square.

Stitch RST, carefully matching seam lines. 8. Trim blocks to ensure that each block is 5" x 5". You will have 20 complete blocks. 9. Using the layout in Diagram 3 as a guide, arrange background squares and patchwork squares, placing the blocks to create a scrappy look. You will have one extra block that will allow you to play with the layout. 10. Stitch RST into rows, then assemble by stitching rows together — pressing seams open as you go. 11. Once assembled, square up as shown in Diagram 3. 12. Baste, quilt, bind and enjoy!
