Scrum Board As a team member works through a sprint, they need a way to indicate their progress. Having a clear and easy way to see how the team is progressing through the Product Backlog is vital. We do this by using a Scrum Board. The Scrum Board is a simple three-column board: Column 1: User Stories for the sprint that have not been started b y anyone. Column 2: User Stories for the sprint that have been started by someone. Column 3: User Stories for the sprint that are done (to be complete, the story must be all the way through testing).

Step 1: Add the Sprint Backlog User Stories to the “Not Started” Column The board is typically large and visible to the entire team. To build the board, the team writes the User Stories for the current sprint on post-it notes and posts them in the “Not Started” portion of the board. This is usually done during or immediately after the sprint Planning meeting.

Step 2: Work on User Stories When a team member is ready to start working on a story, they should walk up to the board and move the post-it note with the specific story written on it to the “Started” portion of the board. Some teams prefer to have the team member write their name on the post-it so everyone knows who is working on each story. The goal is to limit the time a single story stays in the “Started” portion of the board. This helps ensure that stories are small (remember the INVEST mnemonic). If a story is in the “Started” section of the board for more than a couple days, the Scrum Master should work with the Product Owner to help create stories that can be completed in a shorter amount of time. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ MOBILE MAKERS ACADEMY 223 W Erie, Suite 4NW, Chicago, IL 60654 www.mobilemakers.co

Step 3: Completing a Story Once the Team Member has completed the story, they should walk up to the board and move that post-it note to the “Completed” section. Whoohoo! They should then move on to their next user story and move their next post-it note to the “Started” section. The cycle continues until the sprint time is up.
