Season Outlook

www.southernowls.com

Coach Art Leary's Southern Connecticut Owls return seven players and three starters from a season ago. The 2004-05 Southern Owls will be a team comprised of many new faces, with four freshman prospects and a total of eight newcomers to complement some solid veterans in the lineup. One of those key veterans is senior co-captain Mike McCurdy, who led the Owls in scoring last season with 16.4 points per game. The guard has averaged 12.1 ppg in his three years with Southern and needs just 23 points to become the 23rd 1,000-point scorer in school history. Joining McCurdy in the backcourt this season will be sophomore point guard Ernie Brown, who started all 27 games for the Owls in his rookie season, averaging 8.6 points (3rd on team) and dishing out a team-high 76 assists. Brown is a valuable asset to this Owl team, a quick guard who plays excellent on-ball defense (48 steals last year) and can rebound in key situations (3.6 rpg in '03-'04). Backing up Brown at the point position this season will be senior co-captain Eric DiStasi, a four-year player who brings leadership to this team; junior Stephen Bernard, a transfer from Fayetteville (N.C.) State; and freshman Greg Boose, who is expected to battle for playing time immediately. A pair of swing players, senior Mike Vukmanovich and sophomore P.J. Isaacson, are also expected to help carry the load offensively. In his two seasons with Southern, Vukmanovich has averaged a combined 10.2 ppg, and a season ago he made a team-best 40 three-point field goals during the year. Isaacson, coming off a freshman season in which he played 20 games for the Owls (8.9 minutes/game), will see more action on the court this season. Isaacson will be a constant three-point threat for opponents throughout the year. In the frontcourt, the Owls will count on veterans Paul Izzo and Joe Branco. Izzo, a sophomore at the forward position, had a solid freshman year for Southern, putting in 7.5 ppg, rebounding at a 4.1 average and getting 23.4 minutes of playing time per game. Branco, a 6-7 senior, played in 17 games a year ago. Freshman forward Michael Luzzi is one of the biggest members of this Southern team at 6-8 and 225 pounds and could contribute right away. The Owls will also look to University of Connecticut transfer Michael Yacenda, a 6-7 junior forward, to provide key minutes off the bench. Junior transfer Bruce Cooper, a 6-8, 245-pound center from Houston, Texas, will join the Owls after the first semester. Cooper is expected to contribute to the Southern frontcourt immediately, with his ability to rebound and score in the paint. .

Head Coach Art Leary The man responsible for the most significant moments in Southern Connecticut men's basketball history, Art Leary is in his 27th year as the Owls’ head men's basketball coach. Among those moments was the 1999-2000 season when the Owls were ranked as high as fourth nationally in Division II and finished with a 25-4 won-lost record. The New England Collegiate Conference honored Leary as its coach of the year in Southern's final season before moving to the Northeast-10 Conference. Leary's team was the top regional seed in the NCAA Division II championship tournament, losing in the New England semifinal.

www.southernowls.com

A Meriden native, Leary was basketball captain and most valuable player at Platt High. He went on to star at Quinnipiac University, helping his teams to NAIA regional tournaments in his junior and senior seasons. Leary is a member of both the Platt and Quinnipiac Athletic Halls of Fame, and is among the top 20 on QU's all-time scoring list with 1,159 points. Leary is the chairman of the Division II National All-American Committee for the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and is also a member of the NABC's Research Committee. He is a professor in the Southern athletic department with an emphasis in sports management. Leary and his wife, Nancy, reside in Wallingford. They have two sons – A.J., a graduate of Catholic University, and Brendan, the former all-time leading basketball scorer at Wesleyan University.

The 1996-97 squad was the finest in Southern history. The Owls won a record 28 games and lost four, won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Northeast regional, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Louisville before losing to eventual champion Cal State Bakersfield, 65-62. The Owls also reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1981-82 and 1982-83. Southern lost to Sacred Heart in the championship game of the New England regional in 1981-82 and played in the Great Lakes Regional with eventual national champion Wright State in 1982-83. Seven of the top 10 scorers in Southern history have been Leary-coached athletes, including No. 1 Rich Radicioni (1985-90), No. 2 Jerritt Lewis (1994-98), and No. 4 T.J. Trimboli (1996-00). A three-time NECC Coach of the Year (1981-82, 1996-97 and 1999-00 ), Leary, whose teams have a 335-320 won-lost record, has coached 33 All-Conference performers.   4
