LEARNING IS NOT ATTAINED BY CHANCE. IT MUST BE SOUGHT WITH PASSION & ATTENDED TO WITH DILIGENCE
Coach Zach’s Corner Head Coach: Zach Lewellyn
The team is looking GREAT and I see visible improvement everyday! To continue our progress and be competitive in the dual meets ahead - please be reminded of the following: Attend Practice: Regular and consistent attendance is expected and required of each and every swimmer. The team acknowledges and understands schedule conflicts and homework/school priorities – however nonattendance should be the exception. Failure to attend practice may compromise a swimmer’s place on the team. If you do not feel your swimmer(s) can meet the attendance expectations – please connect and talk to me. Coordinate Meals: Plan meals around practice and allow time to use the restroom PRIOR to entering the pool. Stretch and Come Prepared: Practice proper stretching and warm up PRIOR to entering the pool. Bring water to properly hydrate throughout practice. Maximize Effort: Swimmers are encouraged to challenge to push themselves physically – and at the same time stay focused and engaged in the instructions provided by the coaches.

Mark’s Message Seals President – Mark Lima
Another exciting Seals Swim Club season has begun! It is exciting for me to see the new and positive changes including many new swimmers (our team is at maximum capacity), new website and online functionality, and new coaches! The East Bay Swim League (EBSL) Executive Board passed an extension of the “Top/Bottom Six Team” dual meet format. The Seals requested another season in the North/South Division – however because of our top notch sixth place finish at the 2013 EBSL Championships – our request was denied. This season, the Seals will compete against the top teams in the league – including San Leandro, Newark, Mission Valley, Highlands, and Chabot. For a complete schedule of dual meets – visit the Seals Website and/or the EBSL website. We have three home meets – so let’s maximize our home pool advantage. Bring it – and show our Seals Spirit by working together as one big family to give our swimmers a great experience. Looking ahead – be reminded the Seals have a significant responsibility to fulfill at the 2014 EBSL Championships – “Clerk of the Course.” The Clerk of the Course is responsible for staging and organizing ALL 1,200 swimmers who participate in the EBSL Championships meet. Parents who volunteer a FULL DAY to Clerk are exempt from all other meet jobs during the regular season.
Be Involved: Parents – stay involved and engaged with your swimmer(s). Ask questions such as “What did you learn?” “Are you tired?” The coaching staff has developed new endurance, speed, and technique drills for the swimmers to practice. Stay interested – provide encouragement – motivate to strive to do his/her very best. We all believe the team has unlimited potential and we cannot wait until the May 17 Time Trials to see results. Looking forward to another great week!

New Faces on Deck Team Director: Scott Taylor
2014 swim season is one of renewed energy and new faces. Although Coach Zach has been both a Seals swimmer and Assistant Coach for many years, we now have the opportunity to see his natural leadership and enthusiasm applied as the Head Coach. Coach Zach is a Seals workaholic. His goal and passion is to turn up the intensity and the fun in 2014 – and for months has been planning and preparing his game plan to make this happen. His ideas come from his vast experience as a swimmer and coaching year round with well respected swim organizations. Working alongside Coach Zach are Lauren Larson, Thomas Wasson, and Janeen Lima. Coach Lauren has been coaching for the last seven years at De Anza Cupertino Aquatics and brings determination and clarity to the team as well as vast experience coaching both swimming and water polo. Coach Lauren swam for her Middle School, High School, and Collegiate teams where she developed a love for swimming. She has been coaching and instructing since she was 17 and has the utmost passion for coaching. Coach Thomas participated on the American High school team as a swimmer and as an assistant coach. He has been in the American pool for more hours than he can count and is looking forward to helping the team excel. Coach Janeen was an integral part of the coaching staff last season and has returned to help guide and develop the team’s youngest swimmers. Janeen serves a double role both as coach and as a swimmer herself. For more information about the coaching staff visit the Seals Website.
Meet Jenn Gutierrez Co-Vice President: Jenn Gutierrez
Hi! I'm Jenn Gutierrez. I'm a late addition to the Board this season. My primary responsibilities are managing the Seals Gear and Seals Store during the upcoming May 17 Time Trials and our other home meets. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and hope that you will stop by the Seals Store and introduce yourselves. As with most stores – one of the toughest challenges is determining item inventory. If you have suggestions or requests for items you’d like to see at the Seals Store and/or available for order, please contact me at
[email protected]. My family - which includes myself, husband Dan, Beckom (12), Corbin (10), and Garrett (7) recently moved to Fremont this past year from Bellevue, WA. I've been a competitive swimmer since age nine and a member of US Masters Swimming. I do most of my swimming as part of long distance triathlon events. I'm happy that my boys enjoy swimming as well - my two older boys were involved in summer swim team and year-round swimming in Washington for the past two years and we are excited that Garrett is now able to join a swim team, too! We are happy to be here in Fremont and enjoying swim practices that are in the sunshine instead of the frequent rain we were used to in WA. I am so impressed with our coaching staff, our swimmers, and our supportive families. I know this will be a great season for the Seals!
Canopies In an effort to build and create a greater sense of community and family, the Board is providing and setting up canopies for all home meets. With a maximum team size of 150 swimmers it is important to modify the pool deck layout to foster and enable inclusiveness for all attendees and ensure we maintain a safe environment that makes it easy to navigate around the pool and to access the entrances/exits. In general – please look forward to these positive changes:
Shepherds: One canopy for the “Shepherds”
Swimmers: Two canopies for swimmers who want shade and hang out with friends and siblings
Community Seating: Additional canopies will be reserved for community seating and be available on a first come first served basis on the day of the meet. Chairs are allowed and other small coolers and items that can be stored between or under chairs are also acceptable
Poolside and Bleacher Seating: The first come, first served seating on the bleachers and along the bleacher side of the pool remains available
Outside of Pool Deck: Many families enjoy tailgating and we encourage you to set up outside the pool deck. A sound system will be connected and announcements will be broadcast throughout the meet for all to hear

Areas to Avoid
Visitor Section: The area under the scoreboard (across from the bleachers) remain reserved for the visiting team
Behind Starting Blocks: This area is for swimmers and should remain clear - unless you are timing or recording
We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of all families. It is our hope and intent that this change will make all Seals families feel welcome, encourage team building and spirit, and provide a safe environment for all to interact and connect.
Get Ready for Time Trials! Time Trials are just around the corner (Saturday, May 17). Time Trials is a critical event and every swimmer should make every effort to participate. The team uses Time Trials to set individual baseline times and it is our opportunity to make sure everyone is familiar with the swim meet process, and equipment/supplies, timer systems, computer programs are all in working order. A few reminders:
Swimmers MUST arrive at the pool and check-in no later than 7 AM. Warm-ups will start at 7:15 AM with youngest swimmers warming up first The meet will begin at approximately 8:15 AM and end at about 11:30 AM.
