2013 Notebook Reynolds Named Louisville Slugger All-American

Junior Drew Reynolds became the 24th Pirate in school history to earn All-America honors after his second-team selection by Collegiate Baseball. As the Pirates top utility player, Reynolds garnered First-Team All-Conference USA accolades after batting a team-best .322 average (68-for-211) with 13 doubles, 22 RBI and 30 runs. On the mound he posted a 3-2 record with a 2.92 ERA and recorded a league and ECU-best 14 saves, which also ranked 14th nationally. He is the sixth All-America selection under head coach Billy Godwin and the first since Kyle Roller and Ryan Woods in 2009.

Lucroy Garners Freshman All-American Honors

Redshirt freshman David Lucroy closed out his stellar rookie season earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball, becoming the 12th freshman selection in school history. The right-hander from Umatilla, Fla. started 14 of 15 games posting a 4-2 record with a 2.49 ERA and set the school freshman record with 82 strikeouts. Lucroy ranked among Conference USA leaders in fewest hits allowed (second with 49), opposing batting average (third at .194), fewest runs (sixth with 31) and ERA (seventh) on his way to Second-Team All C-USA and All-Freshman Team honors. He earned C-USA Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades following his two-hit complete game shutout against Monmouth, where he fanned a career-high 12 batters.

McDonald Wins C-USA Home Run and RBI Titles

Junior first baseman Chase McDonald closed out his collegiate career leading Conference USA in home runs (13), RBI (46) and slugging percentage (.519). Since becoming a full member of Conference USA in 2002, McDonald is the second Pirate to claim the league’s home run crown (Corey Kemp 2008) and third to lead the league in RBI (Kemp ‘08 and Kyle Roller 2009). McDonald, a First-Team All C-USA selection, started 53 of 55 games batting .299 (56-for-187) with eight doubles, 15 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI contests, and was named league hitter-of-the-week on May 6 – the first of his career. Defensively he posted a .989 fielding percentage turning 50 double plays and recording 513 putouts, which is tied for third on the ECU single-season charts.

Cannon Tenth Recipient Of No. 23 Jersey

Senior Jay Cannon joined an elite group of Pirate baseball players when he became the tenth recipient of the honorary No. 23 jersey prior to the start of the 2013 season. The jersey, which was worn by the late ECU Head Coach Keith LeClair throughout his playing and coaching career, became an honorary number for the Pirate baseball program in 2003. Cannon, who started 49 of 52 games, batted .249 (47-for-189) with three home runs, 18 RBI and scored 20 runs last season. The Fuqua Varina, N.C. native posted 10 multi-hit and three multiRBI games, and had a team second-best 13 game hit streak from March 5-24, where he batted .321 with two homers (at Campbell and UNC Wilmington), six RBI and scored nine runs.

Pirate Duo Selected In MLB Draft

For the 13th-straight year, East Carolina had at least two players selected in the Major League First Year Player Draft when Jack Reinheimer (Seattle Mariners) and Chase McDonald (Houston Astros) heard their names called. With Reinheimer’s selection in the fifth round (pick 147 overall), the Pirates have had at least one player taken in the last 17 MLB Draft’s dating back to 1997. The Charlotte, N.C. native, who was selected in the 31st round out of high school by the Atlanta Braves, started 56 games at shortstop batting .271 (60-for-221) with two home runs and 21 RBI. He ranked third on the team with 16 multihit games, which included a season-high five at Jacksonville (March 16). He added nine doubles, had 12 sacrifices, scored 32 runs and swiped a team-best 10 bases. McDonald was taken in the 12th round (pick 347 overall) by the Astros and closed out his Pirate career batting .300 (158-for-527) in 156 games (146 starts) with 19 home runs and 106 RBI.

Six Pirates Earn All-Conference Honors

Chase McDonald and Drew Reynolds highlighted five Pirates that were named all-conference in 2013 with their first-team selections. In all, ECU had six players honored with a pair of first-teamers, three second-team honorees and two named to the all-freshman squad. It marked the seventh-straight year that the Pirates had at least four players earn post-season league honors. Joining David Lucroy on the second-team were sophomore pitcher Jeff Hoffman and junior third baseman Zach Houchins. Hoffman went 6-7 with a 3.20 ERA and led the Pirates in quality starts (11), innings pitched (109 2/3) and strikeouts (84), while ranking second in walk-to-strikeout ratio (0.46). The right-hander from Latham, N.Y. earned C-USA Pitcher-of-theWeek accolades for the second time in his career after tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout against North Carolina Central (Mar. 29). Houchins batted .317 (60-for-189) with five home runs and 42 RBI during his first year with the Pirates. The Wilson, N.C. native ranked among the league leaders in doubles (2nd/18), slugging percentage (3rd/.513), RBI (sixth), and home runs (ninth). He had a team second-best 13-game hit streak (Apr. 23-May 17), where he batted .471 (24-for-51) with nine doubles, 15 RBI, 12 runs and six multi-hit games. Catcher Travis Watkins rounded out the Pirates all-conference selections after being named to the All-Freshman Team along with Lucroy. The Concord, N.C. native batted .267 (28-for-105) during his rookie season with four doubles, 16 RBI and nine runs scored. He started 34 of 44 games behind the plate throwing out 13 base runners and posting eight multi-hit contests.

Pirates Receive Academic Honors

Drew Reynolds was named to his second-straight Conference USA All-Academic Team last spring becoming the first Pirate to accomplish this honor. As the Pirates designated hitter and closer, Reynolds is a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member (2011-13), a 2011 C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal Winner and a six-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll recipient, where he holds a 3.43 cumulative GPA as

a physical education major. Joining Reynolds on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher) were Grayson Bailey, Jay Cannon, Jake Harris, Jonathan Holt, Sam King, Deshorn Lake, Joshua Lovick, Chase McDonald, Nick Thompson and Travis Watkins. Two Pirates were also named Academic Medal Winners for having a GPA of 3.75 or higher (Lovick and Thompson).

Houchins And Reynolds Named To C-USA All-Tournament Team

Juniors Zach Houchins (IF) and Drew Reynolds (DH) were named to the 2013 Conference USA All-Tournament Team following the C-USA Championship Title Game. It marked the ninth-straight year that ECU had at least one player represented on the tournament team dating back to 2005.  Houchins batted .500 (6-for-12) in ECU’s three games driving in four runs and scoring three. He ranked among the individual leaders in stolen bases (2/t1st) and RBI (t3rd), while leading all third baseman in hits and ranking second in RBI and runs scored. Reynolds capped another productive offensive season batting .462 (6-for-13) as the Pirates designated hitter recording an RBI and scoring two runs. On the mound, he appeared in a pair of games picking up his team-leading 14th save (also tied for league lead) allowing a run (earned) on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Quartet Of Pirates Take Home C-USA Weekly Honors

In addition to David Lucroy (Mar. 11) and Jeff Hoffman (Apr. 1), two other Pirates (Drew Reynolds/Apr. 15 and Chase McDonald/May 6) took home Conference USA Player-of-the-Week

honors in 2013. Reynolds earned his second career player-of-the-week accolade (first as a pitcher) after picking up both victories in a series win at Tulane. The right-hander tossed 3.1 perfect frames of relief, tying his career-high in strikeouts with six – the same number that starter Jeff Hoffman had in his 9.2 innings of work against the Wave inhis start. Reynolds picked up the series-clinching win Sunday, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings where he struck out two in ECU’s 4-2 victory. In two games on the weekend, he tallied 5.0 scoreless frames with eight punch outs and two walks. McDonald was named hitter-of-the-week after helping the Pirates to a 3-1 week, including a C-USA series victory over first place Southern Miss. He batted a team-best .500 (8-for-16) with two home runs, a double, six RBI, five runs scored and added three walks. In four games, McDonald collected at least one hit, drove in and scored at least one run. He recorded three multi-hit and two multi-RBI games on the week. The right-handed slugger set the tone for the Pirates comeback win against Southern Miss in game one of the series, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of walks, while his two-run homer in the fourth started the Pirates four-run frame where they never relinquished the lead. In game two, he collected two singles, a double, drove in a run, scored another and walked. In the series finale, McDonald belted his league-leading eighth home run in the seventh inning to extend ECU’s lead to 2-0. He then recorded his seventh career game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single that scored Jay Cannon for a 3-2 victory, and the series win over the Golden Eagles. Defensively, he thwarted a pair of potential runs in game three, throwing a Southern Miss runner out at the plate in the first and second frames.
