Section 11-3 LED Lighting with Hillsboro Truck Beds Turn Signal Double Flash Rate Late model trucks use a computer to monitor the current (amp) on the turn signal circuits to determine if a bulb is burnt out. If too much or too little current is being drawn by the circuit, the blinker will flash at a double flash rate. Because LEDs draw significantly less current than traditional incandescent lamps (as low as 1/10th), using LED lights in a Hillsboro Truck bed can cause a double flash rate of the turn signal circuits. The double flash rate can be corrected in a couple of different ways depending on the make and year of the truck. Ford All Ford incomplete vehicles (cab/chassis trucks) built after 1-03-08 have “lamp outage detection” turned off and are LED compatible. 2008 and newer pickup box removal trucks require the SJM (Smart Junction Box) to be reconfigured to accommodate LED lighting. This can be done at a Ford dealer. Specific information can be found in the Ford QVM Bulletin Q-158R1 “LED Lighting with Smart Junction Box” available at https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/. 2007 and older Ford trucks can be corrected by replacing the standard flasher with an LED flasher available at a local auto parts store, or by installing LED resistor harnesses from Hillsboro Industries. Please see the “LED Resistor Harness” section below. Dodge 2006 and newer Dodge trucks have computerized control of the turn signal circuits. The computer cannot be configured to accommodate LED lights. In order to accommodate LED lighting in place of the original incandescent lighting, Dodge recommends the use of 6 ohm 50 watt power resistors wired in parallel with the LED lamps. For more info see http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2009/docs/dcdm/dcdmextlitmod.pdf Hillsboro Industries has LED resistor harnesses available. Please see the “LED Resistor Harness” section below. 2005 and older Dodge trucks can be corrected by replacing the standard flasher with an LED flasher available at a local auto parts store, or by installing LED resistor harnesses from Hillsboro Industries. Please see the “LED Resistor Harness” section below.

GM “All New” 2007 and newer chassis cab and box delete option models have “bulb outage detection” turned off and will work with LED lights. “All New” 2007 and newer regular tucks (pickup box models) need to have the BCM calibration changed if LED lights are used. This must be done at a dealer. This information can be found in GM Upfitter Integration Bulletin #81, Rev. 1 available at http://www.gmupfitter.com/publicat/bull/Bulletin_81R1.pdf “Classic” 2007 and older GM trucks can be corrected by replacing the standard flasher with an LED flasher available at a local auto parts store, or by installing LED resistor harnesses from Hillsboro Industries. Please see the “LED Resistor Harness” section below.

LED Resistor Harness Please read the previous section to see whether a resistor harness is needed to correct the turn signal double flash rate. Hillsboro Industries has developed a LED resistor harness (part number 233519) that plugs in between the LED light and the Hillsboro truck bed wiring harness. Two resistor harnesses are required, one each for left and right turn signal. The resistor harness contains a 6 ohm 50 watt power resistor. The resistor draws the same current (appx. 2 amps) as the original incandescent light and therefore the turn signals flash at the correct rate. To install the resistor harness, plug it in between the LED stop/turn/tail light and the Hillsboro truck bed harness. The power resistor gets very hot during operation and needs to be mounted to a metal surface (preferably aluminum) which acts as a heat sink. Make sure that all wiring is kept clear of the resistor and heat sink. Repeat installation on opposite side turn signal circuit.
