MIKE BROWN • QB • R-Senior Liberty • Charlottesville, Va.
KEVIN FOGG • DB • Junior Liberty • Raleigh, N.C.
Brown was responsible for four touchdowns in Liberty’s 38-7 win over Robert Morris Saturday. He opened the game’s scoring with a five-yard run, then completed a 39-yard pass play to Pat Kelly to put the Flames ahead 14-0. Brown added his second rushing touchdown of the night with a 7-yard run in the third quarter, and connected with Ryan Ferguson on a 37yard scoring strike to put Liberty ahead 28-0. Brown finished the night with a 168.89 efficiency rating and 252 total offensive yards (209 passing yards on 13-of22 attempts and 43 yards rushing). It was his fifth career game with two rushing scores.
Fogg made five tackles (three solo, two assisted) and intercepted two passes in Liberty’s victory over Robert Morris. He also added a tackle-for-loss and a pass break-up. He became the first Flame since 2004 to intercept two passes in a contest, and his second interception of the night set-up Liberty’s third touchdown of the game. Fogg helped contain Robert Morris most of the evening, as the Colonials managed just 234 total offensive yards and did not cross the 50-yard line until midway through the third quarter. After RMU scored its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, Fogg returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
CEEJAY HARRIS • LB • Senior Presbyterian College • Long Beach, Calif.
TREVER AUSTIN • PK Gardner-Webb • Shelby, N.C.
Harris returned a blocked field goal attempt 65 yards for a touchdown in giving the Blue Hose a 10-point lead against North Greenville. With PC clinging to a 24-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Brian Davis blocked the Crusaders’ 39-yard field goal attempt and Harris scooped it up at the 35-yard line and eventually scored to become the fifth player in Big South football history to achieve this feat.
Austin booted a career-long 41-yard field goal against Ohio in the third quarter for Gardner-Webb’s only scoring of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, he executed a perfectly accurate onside kick that the Runnin’ Bulldogs recovered.

COASTAL IS BIG SOUTH’S LONE 2-0 TEAM Coastal Carolina is 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2005 and just the third time in its nine-year football history (the other time was in 2004). The Chanticleers are looking to achieve their first-ever 3-0 start.

HOME SWEET HOME Liberty won its ninth-straight home opener Saturday (6-0 under head coach DANNY ROCCO), meaning the Big South is now 3-2 in home openers this season with two teams left. Stony Brook will make its home debut this Saturday against Brown, with Charleston Southern’s home opener set for Week 4. Below is a look at the two teams’ last home opening win and current home opening streaks.

LIBERTY’S HOME WIN STREAK REACHES 10 Liberty’s home-opening win against Robert Morris this past Saturday was the Flames’ 10th consecutive home victory (9th-straight at Williams Stadium), the third-longest home winning streak in Big South history. Liberty’s last home loss was on Sept. 26, 2009 against this week’s opponent -- James Madison. AGENT P Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior WR JAMES PERRY III is tied with former Runnin’ Bulldog DUVAUGHN FLAGLER (2004-07) for second all-time in Big South history with 188 career receptions. Perry is 15 receptions away from breaking the Conference record of 202, which is held by former Charleston Southern WR MAURICE PRICE (2004-06). Perry, who is the second-leading active leader in career receptions leader in FCS, is on pace to break Price’s record on Oct. 8 vs. Liberty. AIR MAIL Liberty QB MIKE BROWN, who was the first quarterback in Big South football history to pass for at least 200 yards in every game during the season in 2010, has now surpassed that yardage total in 13 consecutive games after passing for 209 yards this past Saturday against Robert Morris. In just 14 career starts at quarterback, Brown has thrown for more than 200 yards in each contest, is 287-of-448 passing ( =64.1 percent) for 3,686 yards and 27 touchdowns, in addition to being 10-4. Brown also became the eighth player to throw 30 career touchdown passes when he reached the milestone this past weekend. GROUND PACKAGE Liberty QB MIKE BROWN is the fifth player in Big South history with 1,000 career rushing yards at the quarterback position, as he surpassed the milestone in Week 1 at North Carolina State. In his time as Liberty’s signal-caller, he has rushed 211 times for 1,062 yards (5.03 average) and 12 scores starting under center. Gardner-Webb’s NICK ROBERTS (2002-05) is ahead of Brown on the all-time quarterback rushing list with 1,182 yards. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Conference’s active scoring streak at 65 games, which is the second-longest in League history. The record is 67 games by Coastal Carolina from 2003-08. Meanwhile, Presbyterian College has not been shutout in its last 54 games (36 as official Big South members), followed by Gardner-Webb (35) and Stony Brook (29). DID YOU KNOW... ... that Coastal Carolina TE DAVID DURAN is four receptions away from becoming the first tight end in Big South history with 60 career receptions? Duran has 56 career catches, just three shy of former Gardner-Webb TE JOSH MILLER’s Conference record of 59 from 2007-10.

DOUBLE DOWN Stony Brook’s streak for most consecutive games scoring in double figures ended at 28 games this past weekend, as the Seawolves scored just seven points at Buffalo. SBU’s streak was the fourth-longest in Big South history. Coastal Carolina takes over the Conference’s active streak, as the Chanticleers have scored 10+ points in each of their last 13 contests. GETTING YOUR KICKS AT 50 Liberty PK MATT BEVINS is the NCAA’s active FCS leader in career field goals with a Big South-record 57, and he is three away from becoming just the 11th kicker in the classification’s history with 60 career field goals. Meanwhile, Bevins made a 50-yard field goal at North Carolina State in Week 1, his fourth career make from that distance -- extending his Big South record in that category. Bevins booted a 50-yarder in his sophomore year and made a 52-yarder and 50-yarder as a junior last season. GO THE DISTANCE Presbyterian College’s CEEJAY HARRIS became the fifth player in Big South history to return a blocked field goal attempt for a touchdown when he accomplished the feat this past Saturday against North Greenville. Harris scooped up BRIAN DAVIS’ block of the Crusaders’ 39-yard field goal attempt at the 35-yard line and retuned it 65 yards for the score. It marks the second consecutive season that the Big South has had such a return, and Harris’ distance is the fourth-longest of the five returned for a score. SIR CHARLES Charleston Southern DB CHARLES JAMES recorded his first interception of the season Saturday at Florida State, his ninth career pick. He is now tied with former Coastal Carolina safety DOMINIQUE DAVENPORT (2006-10) for seventh-place in Big South history. James’ 39-yard return against the Seminoles pushed his career interception return yardage to 118 -- which vaulted him into seventh-place in League annals in that category. Of his nine career INTs, three have come against FBS opponents (2 at Hawai’i in 2010 and 1 at Florida State). KING OF THE HILL Coastal Carolina’s ARAMIS HILLARY is off to a good start as the Chanticleers starting quarterback. In two games, he is 26-of-37 passing ( =70.3 percent) for 350 yards and one touchdown for a 158.65 efficiency rating. He also has scored three rushing touchdowns and is averaging 212.5 yards of total offense -- second in the Conference. SWEET CHILD O’ MINE Coastal Carolina’s JAMIE CHILDERS has seen action at both QB and TE this season for the Chanticleers. When splitting time with ARAMIS HILLARY as the Chants’ signal-caller, Childers is 11-of-16 passing ( =68.8 percent) for 140 yards and one touchdown for a 162.88 efficiency rating. He has also rushed for 39 yards. As a tight end, Childers has caught two passes for 38 yards, tied for fourth on the squad. TOTAL RECALL Liberty QB MIKE BROWN is now eighth in Big South history with 5,454 career total offensive yards, and is 546 yards away from becoming the sixth player in League history with 6,000. Brown is 32 yards away from surpassing former Gardner-Webb QB DEVIN CAMPBELL (2005-08) for seventh-place, as Campbell amassed 5,485 yards. Meanwhile, Brown has nine career games with 300 total offensive yards, just two away from tying the Big South mark of 11 that is held by Charleston Southern’s COLLIN DRAFTS (2003-06). SOLO ARTIST Presbyterian College DB JUSTIN BETHEL, who is the Big South’s all-time leader with six blocked kicks, is 7th in League history with 149 career solo tackles. He needs seven to crack the top five and 19 for second-place. Former Charleston Southern LB JADA ROSS holds the career record for most solo tackles with 195. Meanwhile, Bethel surpassed 200 career tackles in Week 1 against Wofford and currently sits at 206. THANK HEAVENS FOR BEVINS As mentioned above, Liberty senior PK MATT BEVINS is the Conference’s all-time leader with 57 career field goals (57-of-72, =79.2 percent) and he ranks second in Big South history with 283 career points kicking as well as third in overall scoring. He needs 15 points to break the Big South career kick scoring record of 297 points, which is held by Coastal Carolina’s JOSH HOKE (2003-06). Bevins’ 11 career 10-point kicking games is most in League history, and he needs 15 PATs for second in Conference annals.

CATCHING UP Liberty redshirt-senior CHRIS SUMMERS became the fourth Big South player with 20 career touchdown receptions when he reached the milestone with a 27-yard TD grab in Week 1 at North Carolina State. Summers also moved into the Conference’s career top 10 in receptions and receiving yards during the contest, and is now 10th in League history with 132 career catches and 9th with 1,841 career yards. He needs seven receptions for ninth-place and 46 yards for the eighth spot. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK Charleston Southern DB CHRIS KUZDALE is among the national nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams -- college football’s preeminent community service award. Kuzdale is the lone representative from the Big South Conference, and is the League’s third-ever nominee. Kuzdale’s former teammate JORDAN LANCASTER was named to the team last year -- the only Big South Conference student-athlete to be recognized with this achievement. THE IGNITOR Liberty QB MIKE BROWN is the only player in Big South history with 1,000 career rushing, passing and receiving yards. He currently stands at 1,558 career rushing yards, 3,896 career passing yards and 1,049 career receiving yards. 300-TACKLE CLUB Three Big South players have a chance to enter the Conference’s 300-career tackle club this season, which currently has eight members. VMI linebacker A.J. GROSS is the League’s active leader with 276 career stops, ahead of teammate BYRON ALLEN (239). Gardner-Webb’s MARTY PATTERSON (221) returns after missing all of last year with an injury and is looking to become the fourth Runnin’ Bulldog on the Big South’s 300-tackle list.

FB-YES For the second consecutive year, the Big South will play a League-record 10 games against FBS opponents this season. In 2010, the Conference picked up its first-ever wins against FBS members, and did so on the same day when Gardner-Webb and Liberty defeated MAC teams on Sept. 11. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were the first to claim victory with its 38-37 overtime triumph at Akron at 3:15pm. Less than seven hours later, Liberty emerged with a 27-23 win at Ball State at 9:55pm. The Big South was the only FCS AQ Conference with two FBS wins in 2010. BIG SOUTH’S NEWEST COACH GETS FIRST WIN New Gardner-Webb head coach RON DICKERSON JR. was victorious in his head coaching debut with the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 34-17 win over Brevard in Week 1. He is the fourth consecutive GWU coach to win his first game. Dickerson joins Coastal Carolina’s DAVID BENNETT (2003), Liberty’s DANNY ROCCO (2006) and VMI’s SPARKY WOODS (2008) among the current Big South coaches who have won their coaching debut in the Conference. BIG SOUTH HAS TWO WALTER PAYTON CANDIDATES For the first time in Big South history, the Conference has two candidates on the Walter Payton Award Watch List in the same season. Liberty QB MIKE BROWN, who was a finalist last year and finished 11th in the voting, made the 2011 list, as did teammate WR CHRIS SUMMERS. This marks the fifth time since 2006 that the Big South has had official candidates for the top offensive individual honor in FCS. “I’LL TAKE FOOTBALL GAMES FOR 100 PLEASE, ALEX” Coastal Carolina and head coach DAVID BENNETT will play the 100th game in program history this year when the Chanticleers host Presbyterian College in the ninth game of the season on Nov. 5. In addition, Charleston Southern head coach JAY MILLS will coach his 100th game at the helm of the Buccaneers when CSU faces PC in the season finale on Nov. 19. Meanwhile, VMI will play its 100th game as Big South members this year when the Keydets face Gardner-Webb on Nov. 19.
