DE’ANGELO HENDERSON • RB • R-Sophomore Coastal Carolina • Summerville, S.C.
DaRON DICKEY • DB • R-Junior Presbyterian College • Greenville, S.C.
Henderson rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in leading Coastal Carolina to a 30-3 victory over South Carolina State. He had 10 runs of seven yards or better, including six runs in double digits. Henderson gained 122 yards on 15 carries in the first half alone and opened the game’s scoring with a 6-yard run on the Chanticleers’ first drive. He added five carries for 50 yards in the third quarter, including a 32-yard TD run to clinch the game. Henderson averaged 8.6 yards per rush in recording the seventhhighest single-game rushing total in school history.
Dickey tallied six tackles (five solo), one tackle-forloss for minus-7 yards, two pass break-ups and recovered his own forced fumble in Presbyterian’s win over nationally-ranked Furman. In the fourth quarter, he burst into the backfield and forced a fumble and recovered the loose ball to give PC possession at the Paladins’ 35-yard line. The Blue Hose scored the game-winning touchdown eight plays later. Dickey tied for the team-high in tackles and helped PC limit Furman to season lows in yards (214) and points (7).
STEPHEN DOAR • P • R-Junior Presbyterian College • Landrum, S.C.
MIKE BASILE • S • Freshman Monmouth • Brick, N.J.
In a game of field position, Doar helped PC pin No. 12 Furman deep early and often en route to the 10-7 victory over the Paladins. Doar set a school Division I record with five of his eight punts landing inside the 20-yard line, including a punt that pinned the Paladins at their own 2-yard line in the first quarter. He also delivered punts that forced Furman to start at the 17, 13, 10 and 18-yard lines as well, and just one of his eight punts was returned for four yards.
Basile secured Monmouth’s 21-16 win over rival Wagner with his fourth quarter interception in the end zone. With Wagner at the Monmouth 15-yard line, Basile was in man coverage against the tight end and came away with the turnover and allowed the Hawks to run out the final 1:43 on the clock. He finished the day with four tackles (two solo, two assisted).

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL FIRST -- UNDEFEATED WEEK The Big South Conference went 6-0 this past week, the first time in League history that every Conference member won its respective non-conference match-up in the same week. Four of the wins were against FCS foes -- the same total in Week 3 of the 2013 season. Five Big South members are above .500 after three games -- another League first. EIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH The Big South is 8-1 through nine games against FCS opponents, building on last season’s non-conference success that saw the League open 9-2 against FCS competition the first three weeks en route to a 16-9 mark in the regular-season. PRESBYTERIAN KNOCKS OFF NATIONALLY-RANKED FURMAN The Presbyterian College Blue Hose defeated No. 12/12 Furman, 10-7, this past Saturday for their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2008 when PC downed No. 17 Liberty. Furman is now the highest-ranked team that PC has defeated at the Division I level. Presbyterian’s win over the Paladins marks the second-straight season the Big South has recorded a regular-season victory over a nationallyranked non-conference FCS opponent, and the sixth different season overall in the Big South’s 13-year football history. BIG SOUTH’S STREAK WITH NATIONALLY-RANKED PROGRAM CONTINUES With Coastal Carolina ranked No. 5 in this week’s FCS Coaches poll and No. 5 in The Sports Network ranking, the Big South has had a football squad ranked for 40 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 campaign (Oct. 24). The Conference has had a Top 5 team in seven of the last 12 rankings.

LIBERTY CRACKS TOP 25, GIVES BIG SOUTH TWO RANKED TEAMS EARLIEST IN HISTORY The Liberty Flames are ranked No. 24 in The Sports Network poll, their first appearance in the Top 25 since 2011. Liberty’s return gives the Big South two nationally-ranked teams in the same week for the third time in four seasons. In addition, this week’s list marks the earliest point in a season for two League teams to be ranked at the same time.

CLASH OF THE TITANS Saturday’s Bryant (No. 25 FCS Coaches) at Liberty (No. 24 Sports Network) match-up will be the 15th time in Conference history that a ranked Big South member will play a ranked non-Conference opponent. The Big South is 6-8 in the previous 14 games, but five of the eight losses have been by seven points-or-less. Saturday’s game will mark the eighth head-to-head clash in the regular-season, and the Big South is 3-4 in those contests.

BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS WITH 3-0 TEAMS For the second consecutive year, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina each are 3-0 -- matching the Big South record for most teams opening 3-0 in the same year. The Buccaneers are 3-0 for the third time since the Big South began football in 2002, while the Chanticleers are 3-0 for the second time in school history. Meanwhile, Monmouth is 2-0 for the first time since 2006 when the Hawks opened the season 4-0. PROTECTING THEIR HOUSE The Big South is undefeated at home thus far at 10-0. Coastal Carolina has the League’s longest active home win streak at 10, tied for the fourth-longest home win streak in Big South history. It is the Chanticleers’ longest home win streak since winning 12 consecutive home games from Sept. 11, 2004 - Nov. 12, 2005. Liberty’s home win streak now stands at four, followed by Charleston Southern (3), Gardner-Webb (3), Presbyterian (2) and Monmouth (2). HENDERSON HOPPING TOWARDS HISTORY Coastal Carolina RB DE’ANGELO HENDERSON has rushed for 391 yards through the Chanticleers’ first three games, the Big South’s highest rushing total after the first games of a season since 2003 when VMI’s SEAN MIZZER had 413 rushing yards in the Keydets’ first three games of the year. Henderson’s total is the most after three games in school history -- bettering the mark of 387 set last season by AllAmerican and current Baltimore Raven LORENZO TALIAFERRO (387). Henderson’s total also exceeds the yardage Big South single-season rushing record holder MIGUEL MAYSONET had after the first three games in 2012 (382). Maysonet finished with 1,964 rushing yards that season. WALKING THE PLANK Charleston Southern has held three straight opponents to 10 points-or-less (9-10-10), the first time the Bucs have achieved this feat since the start of Big South football in 2002. Gardner-Webb was the last Big South team to hold an opponent to 10 points-or-less in back-to-back-to-back games (10-0-7), which was last season from Sept. 14-28. The last Big South team to hold an opponent to 10 points-or-less in four consecutive games was Liberty in 2006, which occurred in the first four games (0-7-10-0).

CAN’T FUMBLE THIS NOTE Big South football members have already returned four fumbles for touchdowns this year, tying the Big South single-season record for most fumble return scores. The last time was in 2011, as well as in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2009. A record four different teams -- Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Liberty and Presbyterian -- have the fumble return TDs this season. The previous best was three. FANNING THE FLAMES Liberty set a Big South single-game record for yards per play with its 16.03 average against Brevard this past Saturday. The Flames gained 625 yards on just 39 offensive plays, smashing the previous record of 10.66 (Stony Brook vs. Pace - Sept. 8, 2012). Liberty averaged 12.96 yards per rush (23 for 298) on Saturday, breaking the League single-game mark of 11.79 yards per carry that was established by Coastal Carolina in 2006 at VMI (28 for 330). HIGH RATE OF RETURN Coastal is 18-1 in its last 19 games when rushing for more than 200 yards, including 2-0 this season. The Chanticleers have rushed for more than 200 yards 63 times in their history, and are 58-5 ( =92.1) when reaching 200 rushing yards. Carolina has rushed for 200-plus yards in 20 of Head Coach JOE MOGLIA’s 31 games as CCU’s head coach, posting an 19-1 record in such games. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 100, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Coastal Carolina (34). Meanwhile, Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 44, the second-longest streak in Big South history. That record is 45 games, established by the Flames from Sept. 23, 2006 – Sept. 18, 2010. MAN CAVE Charleston Southern is the first program in Big South history to open the season with four consecutive home games. The last time the Buccaneers played four-straight home games was in 2006, which were all wins as part of CSU’s 9-0 start to the season that year. It is the fourth time overall that a Big South football member will have played four home games in a row. The others were Liberty (2005) and Stony Brook (2011). INSIDE THE TACKLE BOX Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is the active leading tackler in FCS with 346 career stops, which ranks fifth in League history. He is 54 away from becoming just the second player in Big South annals with 400. Meanwhile, Presbyterian College’s DONELLE WILLIAMS is 27th with 231. On the cusp of joining the Big South’s 200-tackle club are Liberty’s NICK SIGMON (195) and Charleston Southern’s DEMARIS FREEMAN (190). CHIMA CHEWS IT UP Liberty junior DL CHIMA UZOWIHE is tied for the Big South lead with 2.5 quarterback sacks and has 11.5 for his career -- 13th all-time in League history. Uzowihe is 1.5 sacks away from entering the Big South’s Top 10 sack leaders. SOLO ARTIST Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is third all-time in Big South history with 191 career solo tackles, and needs five to move past Charleston Southern’s JADA ROSS for second-place. Ross had 195 solo hits from 2004-07. Backus needs nine solo stops to break the Big South career record of 199 that is held by former Presbyterian DB and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL (2008-11). CAKE ROSS Coastal Carolina QB ALEX ROSS recorded back-to-back games with 300 yards of offense in Weeks 1 and 2, becoming the first Chanticleer signal-caller with back-to-back 300 offensive yard games since ARAMIS HILLARY in 2012 (309 vs. North Carolina A&T on Sept. 1 and 303 at Furman on Sept. 8). Ross is now tied for fourth all-time in Big South history for most games with 300 total offensive yards at seven. Meanwhile, Ross is eighth in League annals for most rushing yards by a quarerback with 809. He is 51 away from moving past former teammate QB ARAMIS HILLARY (859) for seventh-place. Ross is 191 rushing yards away from becoming the seventh Big South quarterback with 1,000 career rushing yards. BEATTY OR NOT, HERE HE COMES Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY needs 81 passing yards to become the eighth player in Big South history with 6,000 in a career. He currently ranks eighth all-time with 5,919. Beatty ranks in the Conference’s career Top 5 with 534 completions (4th) and 878 pass attempts (5th). He is on pace to become the second Big South quarterback with 600 career completions. Meanwhile, Beatty is among the League’s all-time leaders in total offense for plays (8th - 1,036) and yardage (9th - 5,625).

HE’S GOT THE WILL Presbyterian College redshirt-junior LB DONELLE WILLIAMS recorded his 10th career 10-tackle game in Week 1 with 12 stops at Northern Illinois. Williams, who has played 28 career games, has averaged 8.25 tackles per game in his career, which is 10th in Big South history. Coastal Carolina LB QUINN BACKUS owns a per game average of 8.44 (346 in 41) -- the ninth-highest average in the record books. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM has rushed for a touchdown and passed for a score in the same game five times in his career, and the Flames are 3-2 in such contests -- winning the last three. Meanwhile, Woodrum threw four touchdowns against Brevard on Saturday, increasing his career total to 35 -- good for 10th in Big South history and leaping ahead of Coastal Carolina’s ALEX ROSS (33). Woodrum also surpassed 5,000 career yards on Saturday and stands at 5,271 in his career to move into 10th-place in that category as well. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!! Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College both added lights to their football stadiums during the offseason. CSU won its first-ever home night game in Week 1 and is 3-0 in its home night games thus far. PC was victorious in its two night games at Bailey Memorial Stadium this season. The Blue Hose played under the lights at home for the first time since Oct. 27, 1990 against Wingate at Old Bailey Stadium. PC lost that game, 33-22. BIG SIG Liberty redshirt-senior LB NICK SIGMON needs one tackle-for-loss to become the 11th player in Big South history with 30 career TFL. Sigmon would be the second Liberty player on the list, as STEVEN ACKLEY recorded 30 stops behind the line of scrimmage from 2004-07. LaQUA MAYES HAYES Presbyterian RB LaQUA MAYES broke through for a 92-yard touchdown run against Bluefield in Week 2, establishing the record for longest rush from scrimmage in Big South football history. The previous record was 86 yards set by former Coastal Carolina FB and current Carolina Panther MIKE TOLBERT against VMI on Oct. 27, 2007. BIG BLUE Presbyterian College amassed 678 yards of offense against Bluefield in Week 2, the fifth-highest singlegame total in League history. The Blue Hose finished with 523 rushing yards against the Rams -- the second-most single-game total in the Conference record books. PC averaged 9.69 yards per play and 8.44 yards per rush in the victory. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL RETURNS TO ESPN3 IN 2014 The Big South Conference will televise eight football games exclusively on ESPN3 this season. The “Game of the Week” package includes a non-Conference broadcast for the second time and begins Oct. 4 when Gardner-Webb hosts Charlotte. The first League game on E3 will be Oct. 11 with the Coastal Carolina at Presbyterian College contest. The eight games will again utilize instant replay with assistance from DVSport. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL TO AIR ON AMERICAN SPORTS NETWORK Big South football will appear on the new American Sports Network (ASN) in 2014, as six contests -- five of them between Conference members, will be broadcast on affiliates and stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. The first telecast is the Sept. 27 Elon at Coastal Carolina game live at 7:00pm. The six broadcasts push the League’s overall package to a Big South-record 14 this season (12 League games). In addition, the final five weeks of the 2014 regular-season will now feature two televised games each week. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet in the season-finale for the first time, as their Nov. 22 match-up in Conway will mark their 12th meeting. Coastal leads the series, 6-5, and the winner of the matchup has won or shared the Big South football Championship nine times. The Chanticleers won threestraight over Liberty from 2004-06 en route to three consecutive titles (two outright, one shared). The Flames were victorious from 2007-09 while winning three-straight Big South crowns (two outright, one shared). Coastal won last season’s meeting and both teams shared the title in 2013, as well as 2010 and 2012. GOOD WORK YOUNG MEN For the first time in Big South history, two football players have been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Charleston Southern’s CHRISTIAN REYES and Liberty’s JONATHAN BURGESS are among the 182 candidates from every subdivision and classification. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010.
