Wm. Bart Turner A regular meeting of the Marion School Board was held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the District Administration Office, with A. Jan Thomas, Jr., Steve A. Sutton, Rev. Jeffrey Richardson, Brian Proffitt, Wm. Bart Turner and Daryel Jackson in attendance. Also in attendance were Don Johnston, Superintendent; Jeff Altemus, Deputy Superintendent; Dr. Robin Catt, Director of Elementary Education; Hugh Inman, Director of Secondary Education; W.T. “Dusty” Duncan, Director of Facilities; Kristi Rice, AES Asst. Principal; Tamika Jordan, AES Curriculum Technologist; Carissa Lacy, MMS Principal; Ruth Hegwood, MMS Curriculum Technologist; and Peggy Cozart, Secretary to Superintendent. (See attached sign-in sheet for complete list.) Mr. Johnston called the meeting to order. Don Johnston conducted the election of officers. Mr. Johnston asked for nominations for president. Steve A. Sutton nominated A. Jan Thomas, Jr. for school board president. Wm. Bart Turner seconded the nomination. Mr. Thomas was elected president with a unanimous vote. Mr. Thomas then asked for nominations for vice –president. Rev. Jeffrey Richardson nominated Steve A. Sutton for vice-president. Brian Proffitt seconded the nomination, and Mr. Sutton was elected vice-president with a unanimous vote. Rev. Jeffrey Richardson was nominated for secretary by Brian Proffitt. Steve A. Sutton seconded the nomination, and Rev. Richardson was elected secretary with a unanimous vote.
A Meeting of the Board of Education of Marion School District No. 3 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION, CONTINUED Brian Proffitt nominated A. Jan Thomas, Jr. as disbursing officer and all other board members as alternates. Steve A. Sutton seconded the nomination. Mr. Thomas was elected disbursing officer and all other board members as alternates with a unanimous vote. The minutes of the regular board August 22, 2013, were approved with a motion from Rev. Jeffrey Richardson, second from Steve A. Sutton, and passed with a unanimous vote. No patron participation requested. The board reviewed the monthly finance and attendance reports. Tamika Jordan was recognized by Ms. Kristi Rice, Asst. Principal at Avondale, as a 2013 Milken Fellow. Mr. Thomas presented Mr. Jordan with a certificate on behalf of the board. The school spotlight was Marion Middle School. Ms. Carissa Lacy gave the board an update on MMS using the Smart Board. Leave requests for Leah Dillahunty, Kim Vaughn, and Shelia Steele were approved with a motion from Wm. Bart Turner, second from Brian Proffitt and passed with a 5 – 0 vote. The request from Marion Athletic Booster Club to use Marion High School Cafeteria on October 25 th was approved with a motion from Brian Proffitt, second from Steve A. Sutton, and passed with a 5 – 0 vote. A construction update was presented by Mr. Jeff Altemus. The 2013-14 School Budget was approved with a motion from Brian Proffitt, second from Steve A. Sutton, and passed with a 6 – 0 vote. Mr. Johnston recommended approval of the following personnel recommendations: Employ: 1. Courtney Ostrander, Kindergarten teacher, AES (new position) (One year contract for the 2013-2014 school year only.) 2. Jade Plunk, adding coaching duty: Sr. Girls Soccer Coach (replacing Joel Shores)

Karen Loving, from cafeteria worker to custodian @ MES (effective 9/16/2013 The personnel recommendations were approved with a motion from Wm. Bart Turner, second from Brian Proffitt and a unanimous vote. Meeting adjourned with a motion from Brian Proffitt, second from Rev. Jeffrey Richardson and a unanimous vote.
