“The “Retreat in Daily Life” is a way for busy people to grow more deeply in their relationship with and commitment to Jesus Christ. This form of retreat involves giving time each day to prayer, committing to the method of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius for one hour each day.”
Episcopal church The Rt. Rev. Ed Konieczny, D.Div ; Bishop The Rev. Mary A. Davis, M Div.
Vicar Woody Leonard, M. ME Organist
The Vestry Vicki Johnson . Sr. Warden Owen Nelson .... Jr. Warden Robert Colclasure … Treasurer Linda Harrison .... Clerk Hugh Jones Marcia Phillips Tina Bouse
With the support of the Vestry, I will begin “Retreat in Daily Life” the first Thursday in October, meeting with a group of 5 people in Norman. The 30 weekly, afternoon sessions will go through the month of May. I have known about this opportunity for some time now and I am called to participate in this discipline at this time. It is part of my spiritual journey and prayerfully will have an impact on my personal relationships and my life/ministry to St. John’s and the Woodward community. My schedule at the church will need to adjust and I ask for your patience that first month to see how that will be made known. Any pastoral emergencies will take priority. In her book, The Desert Mothers: Spiritual Practices from the Women of the Wilderness, Mary C. Earle wrote about the importance of practice, of showing up daily. “This wedding of love and discipline allows us to begin to delight in God’s desire to make us real, to bring us to the fullness of our humanity, to encourage us to grow continually in God’s love and service. And to do that, we need the principles learned from athletes of all kinds. … An athlete will tell you that training requires enough regularity to create muscle memory, so that our muscles “remember” what is expected of them. … This muscle memory is particular to the athlete and the training regimen, just as spiritual practice will have its particular expressions in the life of both the person and the community.” As I keep you in prayer, I ask you to keep me in prayer. Faithfully yours in Christ,

HAPPENINGS
Women of St. John’s…. ….. had an Ice Cream Social at Parish Hall on Wednesday, August 18th. The ice cream was delicious and we had a good turnout. We will be selling fresh pecans from the Westenhaver’s pecan farm! They will be ready to sell in November… just in time for the holidays!! So please, tell your friends and ask them to buy their pecans from us. The Saints and Sinners hosts for August, Valeria & Owen Nelson, held a Taco Supper on Saturday, August 28th, 6:00, at the Parish Hall.. Taco Buenos! It was great fun! Hosts for September are Joanne & Howard Keith.
As stated in the August newsletter, it is necessary to have a successful fundraiser this fall. Your ideas are needed now for planning and any events. Please talk about this as you meet during fellowship.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES….. Anyone interested in working on the scrapbooks for St. John’s? We have the pictures. We need your creativity. Contact Rev. Mary if interested.
Bible Study on the Book of Acts will begin in September. Date, time, place will be announced after Sue Heinsohn returns from her trip to Jerusalem.
Reminder: The altar flowers and Sanctus candle are symbols of our life together. They provide beauty and the candle remains lit throughout the week representing the presence of the Eucharist in the tabernacle. The flowers are $20.00 (for both vases) and the candle is $5.00 per week. Envelopes are in the pews for your giving.
