September 2014 Dear Parent/Guardian, I am writing to inform you of a national initiative that we offer at Shire Oak Academy across all of Key Stage 3. Your son/daughter may have already been a part of this at his/her primary school. Children’s University is an opportunity which has been offered to all. The initiative recognises learning which happens outside of school hours and this can be before or after school. Children, as part of the scheme, have a passport to learning, which costs £3. For each extra-curricular club that they attend at Shire Oak Academy they gain stamps in their passports (which I keep in my office). Stamps equate to rewards/certificates, which are awarded at graduation ceremonies twice a year. Below is an example of the certificates and the amounts that certificates are awarded.

Children’s University is a great opportunity which your son/daughter can choose to be a part of. They gain their stamps for attending a variety of at least 3 clubs, and their passports get stamped each half term, after registers have been returned. Attached is a list of possible clubs that they can attend. They can also attend learning destinations and gain stamps, such as the Sea Life Centre and BBC in Birmingham, to find out more visit the website www.childrensuniversity.co.uk If your son/daughter is not already a member and attends a club at least 6 times this half term, this will make them eligible for FREE membership. If your son/daughter is already a member and you have his/her passport at home, could you please send it into the academy with him/her for my attention. If you have any questions about this fantastic initiative, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01543 452518 or by email, [email protected], or, as an alternative, have a look at the website . Yours sincerely,

Miss S. Eccleston Children’s University Coordinator
