Is this permissible considering the required day off during the playing season legislation? continued on page 2
Answer Analysis: The required day (or days) off may be applied to each studentathlete individually, as opposed to requiring the entire team to take the same day or days off. For this student-athlete, the required day off is satisfied because he did not participate in any countable athletically related activities during one calendar day (Tuesday) during the week. Therefore, it is permissible to require the student-athlete to complete the missed workout on Sunday.
New Interpretation According to Bylaw 17.1.1, the playing season is defined as the period of time between the date of an institution’s first officially recognized practice session and the date of the institution’s last practice session or date of competition (whichever is later). The playing season includes the 45day practice period during the non-championship segment as well as the championship segment.
A required day off is defined as, during the playing season, all countable athletically related activities (per Bylaw 17.02.1) shall be prohibited during one calendar day per week, except during participation in one conference and postseason championship and during participation in NCAA championships.
During the “playing season” only one day off per week is required. The only time two days off per week is required is when you are outside of your official playing season in your 8-hour/week segment(s).
TRYOUTS: A member institution may conduct a tryout of a full- time student currently enrolled at the institution only on its campus or at a site at which the institution normally conducts practice or competition during the regular academic year. If such a tryout occurs outside of the declared playing and practice season, the following conditions apply: •Not more than one tryout per student per sport •The student must not have been recruited •The student must be in good academic standing •Completed medical records •Tryout is no longer than two hours •Competition against the member institution’s team is permissible, provided such competition occurs during the academic year and is considered a countable athletically related activity •Not more than three dates may be used to conduct a tryout.
