SERENITY HOME SUMMER 2016

Polk County Salvation Army

Serenity Home needs you! This summer has been busy for us at Serenity Home. We have had times where the shelter has been so full that we have had to bring out extra beds just to house everyone. Because our shelter is so busy, we are now at a point that additional hands are needed now more than ever. Our number one need at the shelter is drivers. We need people to help drive our residents to appointments, work, and other errands for the shelter. If you have thought about helping before but haven’t signed up to help yet. Please stop in today and learn more. Take home an application. We will be so thankful for the help and you will be blessed by volunteering in this way. Other volunteers needed at the shelter include: those willing to provide evening meals, those wanting to participate in shelter projects, fundraisers and of course as we head into Fall, we start thinking about our Red Kettle Campaign. Help is always needed and we have something for everyone! Please consider volunteering today! To volunteer, please stop by and pick up a volunteer application. Visit with our Shelter Manager Lynn about what you can do and what is needed. We thank you in advance for serving those in the most need by becoming a volunteer!

Shop with a Cop We live in a community full of generous people. One such people group is our Law Enforcement Community. For several years, Serenity Home and the Polk County Salvation Army has sponsored, “Shop with a Cop” for back to school clothes and shoes. Law Enforcement volunteers their time to come and shop with children who are in need for things that they might not otherwise have for school including new shoes, socks, underwear and more. This experience is awesome for the children who need items for school and who would also benefit from the positive experience of shopping with one of our awesome local law enforcement officers. It benefits the kids and the officers are truly blessed by the experience too! Right now we are seeking donations to help with this event. It costs $75 to sponsor a kindergartner through 2nd grade, $100 for 3rd through 5th and $125 for our teen group. If you would like to support this effort, please send donations marked: “Shop with a Cop” to Serenity Home 200 Polk County Plaza Balsam Lake, WI 54810. Checks payable to: Serenity Home. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help with this special day. Thank you in advance for supporting and thank you to our law enforcement who make this day happen!

Save the Date! Coming up in the next few months we will have many ways for you to support Serenity Home Shelter and others who are in need in our community. What a Blast! Raised over $15,000 to help Polk County Children in Need On June 10th, at the Amery Fire Hall, several volunteers from all over the County came together to support the BackPack Program and raise dollars for children in need of a little extra help with food over the weekends. The generosity of the community and the outpouring of support was overwhelming! We are so thankful to the people who donated their time and efforts. We are thankful for the businesses who sponMany came out to support! sored and donated items for the silent auction or the dinner. Countless volunteer hours were spent and the community responded in an amazing way! We thank you so much! So many children will benefit from your generosity! We took so many great pictures that day...wanted to share a few. More can be found on Thank you Rex Cactus and Jim Armstrong! our Facebook page at Polk County Salvation Army.

Birdies for Backpacks Success for Children This year, our Birdies for Backpacks Golf Fundraiser was held on June 7th. 14 teams enjoyed a day of fun! We are thankful to the Luck Golf Course for hosting us and to our many sponsors. The funds raised from this year’s event go to help the Burnett County and Polk County Back Pack Program. 11 Districts participate in the program between the two Counties. Last year the Back pack program supported an averaged of 520 Backpacks each week at a cost of $7 a piece. Thanks to the success of this and other fundraisers, the backpack program will start off strong in the Fall. Plans are already in place to host next year’s golf fundraiser for the BackPack Program. This year we are hoping to form a committee to make the event even more fun! Please contact Angela at 715-485-1221 if you are interested in participating in the planning of the event. The hope is to hold it June 6, 2017. Thank you to all who donated to this years event! Thank you to all who participated and to those of you who donate your time toward our Backpack Program all year! We appreciate you!
