Serenity now May 23, 2012 By Paula Libbey

It’s taken me many years to find “serenity”, but I may finally be learning to accept the things I cannot change. I have grown [though probably not enough for most people to notice]. The “little things” no longer seem to bother me [drive me to the brink of insanity]. What little things? Here are a couple examples… Every May, overly tanned men over the age of 55 begin walking around town without their shirts*. I’m not certain if they lost their shirts or if they simply forgot to finish getting dressed.

Just today, I went on a short errand and encountered three over-55 shirtless men! The first—wearing socks and sandals, but oddly enough, no shirt—walked across the

Moments later, I was startled by another over-55 shirtless man running by my car while

I will never understand this spring tradition where over-55 men toss social

expectations—and their shirts—aside. You don’t see over-55 women tossing their shirts aside and wandering around town or even their front yards. BUT, I am growing

less agitated by this “aged shirtless-ness” with every passing year. [By growing I

Another example of my “growth” is how I’ve learned to accept the fact that I may never, ever [ever, ever, ever] feel rested again. So I just try to make the best of the quiet

Once I fell asleep during a CT scan of my head. The lights were dim, the kids weren’t allowed in the room, and I had six uninterrupted minutes. Last week, I dozed off while having my teeth cleaned. The gentle backward tilt of the chair and the soft, soothing sounds of Mariah Carey singing the remake of “Without You” by Badfinger, provided

Maybe serenity comes with age. Maybe I’m just too tired to care about ALL the little

Ha! It would really disturb you stopping by my farm then. 50 next week, and on occaision have been known to do chores wearing only my workboots. Frightens the heck out of the UPS driver. Reply
