SERENITY RESTAURANT & PARK BALTIMORE, MD, USA UNDERGRADUATE SUBMISSION- STUDIO PROJECT

The restaurant and park create an area of relaxation in the urban environment. The project aims to aid in the revitalization in the neighborhood by establishing a community resource via a connection between the restaurant, park and developing businesses.

SITE

The site is located in a high-traffic, urban setting. In the diagram to the right, the site is indicated in dark green. One can see its proximity to developing areas such as a new apartment complex with retail stores (indicated in light green) and how it is affected by high volume and high speed traffic (dark blue, also photographed at bottom right). I wanted to create an area in the city that people could come to for relaxation, so I wanted to counteract the energy and noise from this this road. I also wanted to focus on pedestrian access (light blue) to the site and make it a very inviting experience.

By elongating the building along the east side, there is an open space between the two points of interest: the restaurant and the apartment complex. This is important for creating a sense of leisure, fun, and relaxation in the busy, urban environment.

The noise from the main road is counteracted by a stepped down seating area with a water feature and sculpture which adds a layer of intimacy to the inner park area and creates a connection between the restaurant guests and the outdoor space.

The building design is composed of one vertical shape intersecting and cutting from a horizontal mass. The relation of these two elements is created with the boundaries of the site in mind.

The plaza is bound by the restaurant to the left and the apartment complex to the right, creating and open space to connect the two.

The stepped-down outdoor dining area divides the park area from the traffic noise as well as offers an inviting view to the oncoming vehicular traffic.

The main pedestrian path coming off from the main street. Wide side walks on either side make the site more pedestrian friendly.

The pedestrian path from the opposite side. The terminal point of the site is reserved for a public sculpture in development.

CONCEPT

By creating a rhythmic series of ramps, bamboo gardens, and sculptural seating, areas of tranquility are created while enticing visitors to enter and circulate the park and restaurant. The drawing at the bottom right illustrates an earlier landscaping concept that focused on creating green spaces that people would circulate around.

The sculpture in the outdoor dining area sits atop a water feature and mimics the vertical element of the surrounding gardens.

The ramps that branch off from the central path entice vistors to enter the plaza, drawing them into sculptural seating areas made more private by the tall plants along the walk-way.

PLANS

The first floor is the restaurant area and the second can function as an event or community space.

PROGRAM bar

Some program features are the bar on one end and a pop-up cafe with outdoor seating on the other end. A view of the indoor dining area is pictured in the first image at the bottom right with a view of the bar next to it.

The inner garden provides a veil between the first and second floors and between the inner and outer dining, simultaneously creating a sense of privacy and connectedness.

CIRCULATION

The diagram illustrates the connection between the interior and exterior circulation.
