MATTERS OF THE HEART - A TRUE VALENTINE SERMON NOTES 6th Sunday after the Epiphany February 12, 2017 Deuteronomy 30:15-20; I Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37 Introduction - True Valentines, true expressions of love are a matter of the heart, not mere words on a piece of paper! That’s what God’s Word, His Law and Gospel, is toward us. They come from His heart, His love for us. And He has a right to expect our true expressions of love in return! I. Keeping God’s loving Law is a matter of the heart and a true expression of our love for God and flowing from that our neighbor as well! “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” Ho 6:6 “‘The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Mk 12:31 “[Jesus said:] ‘You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder...But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.. Mt 5:21-22, 24 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces His wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery…. Mt 5:31-32 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you. Do not take an oath at all....Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.’” Mt 5:33-34, 37 But our hearts are frequently in the wrong place. “For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” Mt 15:19

II.

God’s heart is always in the right place! “God is love.” I Jn 4:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, ....” Jn 3:16 “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” I Jn 4:10 “We love because He first loved us.” I Jn 4:19

Conclusion - God’s love for us in Christ Jesus, that’s the greatest expression of true love! That’s the best Valentine of all and from it flows true love for our spouse, our children, our friends, our coworkers, our neighbors, our parents, our brothers and sisters, our fellow man! Let us repent of all the times our love falls short and embrace anew His love for us in Christ. Let us embrace anew His becoming a man in the person of His Son to love us from the cross. Lets embrace anew His love, forgiveness and new life for you and for me. Let us embrace all this as His daily valentine for us all and respond with thankfulness and praise and love for all. Amen O LORD, TO YOU ALONE BE ALL THE PRAISE HONOR AND GLORY, BOTH NOW AND FOREVERMORE, AMEN!
