STEP-BY-STEP PROCESSES Starting the Family Keynote You are going to create a sunshade family. One of the questions that must always be asked when creating a sunshade is, “what is the host?” To keep this from actually becoming a problem, start with and create the family as a generic model family.

Process 1. Start a new Door Family 2. Clean the Family 3. View = Elevation: Exterior 4. Create Reference Planes as Shown.  Name = Left  Is Reference = Left  Name = Right  Is Reference = Right  Name = Top  Is Reference = Top 5. View = Ref. Level 6. Dimension, EQ, and Label as shown If you apply the Width label, it may break the family. Open the Family Types Dialog; change the Width parameter to whatever width your Reference planes happen to be. Now apply the Width Parameter

7. View = Elevation: Exterior 8. Dimension and Label as shown In this case, you are not dealing with EQ-ed Reference Planes. It is easier to change the actual dimensions of that Reference plane to match the dimensions specified in the Family types dialog. You should now understand that you may either modify the parameters’ Value to match the dimension or vice-versa.

9. Add an Opening to the family 10. View = Ref Level 11. Turn on Shading with Edges.

Value You now have the major Ref Planes built for the Door Family. The value here is not learning to draw Ref planes, label, or dimension. The value here is now you understand that when labeling dimensions, you may either move the Reference plane to match the value of the parameter – or – you may update the parameter’s value to match the dimensions.

Creating the Door Mass Keynote You are building on all the pervious lesions; at this point you know Sweeps and you know you may control a Sweep’s Path. Now you control both the length of the sweep and its angle.

Process 12. Start the Sweep Form Command 13. Draw the path as shown Pick 1 should be on the corner of the opening. Notice that the Ref Plane the Profile is drawn on is attached to the Sweep’s Path. When the path moves, so does that Reference Plane.

14. Dimension and Label as shown  Width Parameter = Same as Opening  Parameter A = Dimension Group  Parameter A = Type Parameter You have now Controlled the Path’s Angle and set its length to be controlled with the same parameter as the door’s opening parameter. 15. Finish the Path 16. Edit the Sweep 17. View = Elevation Right 18. Draw Sketch lines and label as shown Try to dimension and label the “Thickness” parameter to the distance between the right and left sketch line. You are not able to. Why? Think about the Reference Plane you are drawing on. You are not looking straight at these lines. You are in the Right view but that Reference plane is not perpendicular to this view. Dimensions are View specific - Right!

As the Angle of the door’s Path changes, the relative distance in this “Right” view between the sketch lines change. 19. View = 3D View 20. Assign “Thickness” Parameter as shown The 3D View doesn’t care about the angel of the lines. Since dimensions are view-specific, this 3D view doesn’t care about the relative distance between those sketch lines.

21. Finish the Sweep Form 22. Flex the Family checking  Parameter A works  Door Panel’s profile works  You are so far beyond the basic rules

of family creation. If you noticed, the door panel form is not actually controlled by any reference planes, just parameters.

Value This family is simple, but it is a great example of when breaking the rules is the only way to build a family that works. I remember reading somewhere that family creation is both a science and an art. I would agree. I’m not sure if art teachers would agree, but I think what makes a great artist is the knowledge of and when to break the rules.
