Setting Chapter Goals

Setting Chapter Goals The Board of Governors Chairmen will, at least annually, oversee the Resident Council as it devises long-range planning strategies, goals, and objectives and follows through on all progress made. To achieve this expectation the chapter can use many different methods of self-assessment. Within these documents there is two examples of self-assessment and goal setting workshops. Chapter Operations Assessment – This assessment will allow the chapter to review their Borradaile Challenge metrics and assess the chapter’s performance in these metrics. Chapter Officer Action Plans (COAP) – This COAP should be given to each officer or chairman in the chapter. This will assist the officers and chairmen to think about long-term goals for the chapter as related to their specific office or committee.

Chapter Operations Assessment We are going to focus on the chapter’s issues. You should have in front of you the summaries of the Borradaile Challenge results for your chapter. Also, you should have worksheets for Chapter Operations Assessment. Here is what you are to do:  First, spend a few minutes reading the Borradaile Challenge summaries; if there is anything you can’t interpret, speak up and I will help you. Try to identify any trend that you see.  Second, answer the questions in the assessment in an honest and thoughtful manner. We have allotted 30 minutes for these two steps. After that, we will ask you discuss your assessment.

Here is your assignment. In turn, each of you is to present a short summary of your assessment—the greatest strengths, the weaknesses and the target areas you have identified for action.

Those of you listening are to act as consultants. You are the senior officer of your chapter, and you should be capable of giving good counsel to others.  Don’t think about your own issues for a few minutes. Listen to the assessment being presented.  Consider whether the speaker has made a case for the target areas he has identified.  When the speaker is finished, ask questions or make helpful suggestions.  The speaker should listen to the feedback and take any notes that might be helpful. Now take a minute to organize your own thoughts about your assessment and then begin as soon as all three of you are ready.

The Borradaile Challenge identifies specific areas of success and failure, but these metrics reflect symptoms and are not underlying problems. Are there any underlying problems holding your chapter back?

Considering your assessment of the chapter, what are the three to four target areas for which you feel you must set goals for your term as president? (Note: Not all target areas have to be weaknesses or problem areas. You could target a strength that the chapter should build upon.)
