Use 1/4” seam allowance and sew pieces with right sides together unless directed otherwise

Sew the four 2 1/2” strips from coordinating fabrics together to create a strip set. Press seams open. Completed strip set should measure 8 1/2” x44” Cut eight 8 1/2” x 3 3/4” rectangles from the strip set Lay out the various pieces to create the front of the pillows (each pillow will require one 8 1/2” center square, four 3 3/4” corner squares and four 8 1/2” x 3 3/4” rectangles) (diagram 1)

Sew the corner squares to the top and bottom of the right and left strip set rectangles. (diagram 2) Press seams open. Sew the strip set rectangles to the top and bottom of the center square. (diagram 3) Press seams open. Sew the strip sets with the corner squares to the sides of the pillow center. (diagram 4) Press seams open.

appliqué & embellishment of center motifs 1

Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse a piece of iron-on adhesive cut slightly smaller than eight inches to wrong side of fabric chosen



appliqué shapes. Trace appliqué shape onto iron-on adhesive paper and cut out shapes.

* Please Note: Using a rotary cutter, carefully begin cutting larger sized inner sections of the peace sign out and then finish with scissors. These shapes will be used as the wings for the bird appliqué.

Determine preferred layout and position of wings on the bird and trim wings as needed. Fuse appliqué shapes to center of pieced pillow centers Using three threads of embroidery floss, stitch around the appliqué shapes with a buttonhole stitch. (diagram 5) Sew the button onto the bird to represent an eye.

On each of the four 15” squares for the back sections of the pillows, press one edge over 2 1/2” , fold over again 2 1/2” and press.



Top stitch along both edges of folded sections on all 4 pieces.

With right sides together, place two pillow backs on top of the pieced front being certain that the top section of the back



is placed over the pieced top first and the folded section towards the middle. (diagram 6—illustrates placement of 1 back,



layer second back over the other side.)

Pin front and backs together for both pillows. Pin in place and stitch around outside edges using a 1/2” seam. (diagram 7)



Clip corners of pillow and turn right sides out using the opening on the back pieces. Press the seams to achieve a crisp edge



and insert a 14” pillow form into both pillow cases.
