Ask Sew Abbey Q. I am trying to do “onesies” and it is a nightmare. My fabric keeps jamming up. I have a cut-a-way-on the bottom and Ultra-Solvy on top. My font is 7mm and I resized my embroidery to make it smaller. What am I doing wrong? Signed: In a Jam A. Dear In a Jam, There are a number of issues that could be contributing to your nightmare. First of all, t-shirts and “onesies” require an extra step in preparation for embroidery. A t-shirt is stretchy, it may be light weight and it will definitely be washed. So, you need to stabilize the stretchiness of the fabric. We suggest a fusible no show mesh. It is a Cut-AWay stabilizer which will keep its shape and consistency when washed. You can also use Fusi-Knit. Light and Soft or Fuse so Soft These are light weight knit stabilizers that are actually knits. Turn your t-shirt inside out and fuse the No Show Mesh to the wrong side of your t-shirt where the embroidery will be. If you are using the knit stabilizers, Fusi-knit, Light and Soft, or Fuse so Soft, iron this to the wrong side of the t-shirt, opposite the stretch of the knit tshirt. (See diagram.) We now have the stretch stabilized, and are ready to FIX baste the shirt. We do not

hoop the shirt. Hoop Tear-A-Way Light . This is a crisp, light weight Tear-A-Way that will help your stitches to form nicely. The combination of the Cut-AWay and the Tear-A-Way give perfect embroidery both before and after laundering. Mark the start point of your embroidery with a water or air soluble marker. Place the hoop on your embroidery unit and select your embroidery design. Carefully place the t-shirt or “onesie” on the stabilizer and hold it in place with a couple of pins or use basting spray, such as 505 to hold the garment down. Place a layer of Sulky Solvy on top of the t-shirt. This is a

water soluble stabilizer and will act as a “topper” to keep the stitches from sinking into the knit and to keep the knit from “skootching” along as you embroider. Insert a size 75 or size 90 Stretch Needle. Thread with rayon 40 wt. embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. Touch FIX and carefully and slowly baste the Solvy stabilizer and the t-shirt to your hooped stabilizer. (If you use the pins, watch out for the pins, and remove them if you are in danger of sewing over them. When doing your fix stitch, try using your foot control instead of your Start/Stop button. You are now ready to embroider your shirt! Stay with it; walking away can be a recipe for disaster! When embroidering on a “onesie”, your design can contribute to the problem. If you resized correctly in your 5D Embroidery, your stitch count will change correctly. If you did not hit the resize button, it is possible that your design did become smaller, but the stitch count did not change. This means that your design was denser and could contribute to the jamming problem and may put holes in the knit of the t-shirt. When doing any font, size and density go hand in hand. If you are doing a 7mm font, especially script, the needle has a small area to do the stitches. It is always good to do a sample on the same type of fabric that you will be stitching on, before you stitch your design on the garment. You can change the density of your font in the letter tab after you type out what you need. Right click inside the saying. This will bring up a properties screen. Type on “curved satin” or “pattern fill.” The Density number is on both of these screens. Remember. the higher the number is, the farther apart the stitches will be. As always, start with a new needle and a clean machine. This may save you any number of heartaches. If you are still having problems, call or come in to your local Abbey’s. We can help in problem solving. As always,

Happy Sewing!
