Catnap Cuddle-Ups
For each project, you will need: tracing paper pencil fabric marking pencil medium weight cotton or cotton blend fabrics – two 18" squares for Cat Head and Body two 6" x 8" pieces for Cat Tail two 9" squares for each Kitten Head and Body two 4" x 5" pieces for each Kitten Tail thread to match fabrics liquid fray preventative polyester fiberfill crochet hook hand sewing needle desired color embroidery floss embroidery needle craft glue one button (¾" for Cat and ½" for Kitten).
1. For Body pattern, fold tracing paper in half and place fold on dashed line of pattern; trace. Cut out traced pattern; unfold. Trace Head and Tail patterns; cut out traced patterns. 2. Center and draw around each pattern on wrong side of one corresponding fabric piece with fabric marking pencil. Mark opening for turning and stuffing. Do not cut out.
5. (Note: Satin Stitch and Straight Stitch should go through all layers to back of head and be pulled tightly to shape face.) Referring to Stitch Diagrams and grey lines on patterns, use 12 strands of floss for Cat and 6 strands for Kitten and embroidery needle to work Satin Stitch for nose and Straight Stitch for eyes, nose, and mouth, 6. For Cat whiskers, thread a 12" length of 12" strands of floss in embroidery needle. Knot one end approx. 4" from end. Referring to pattern for placement, insert needle at one dot and pull knot up to head. Bring needle from back of head to front at same color dot on other side of nose; knot floss as close as possible to head. Repeat to add remaining whiskers. To stiffen whiskers, rub craft glue into each whisker; shape and allow to dry. Trim whiskers as desired. 7. For Kitten whiskers, follow Step 6 using a 10" length of 6 strands of floss. 8. Referring to photo for placement, sew Head to Body. Sewing through all layers, attach Tail to Body through holes of button.
STITCH DIAGRAMS
3. Matching right sides and raw edges and leaving opening for turning and stuffing as indicated on pattern, use a short straight stitch and sew matching fabric pieces together directly on drawn line. Apply fray preventative to stitching at top of legs (indicated on Body patterns by pink lines); allow to dry.
4. Leaving a ¼" seam allowance, cut out each piece. Clip curves and into corners and turn right side out, carefully pushing curves outward with crochet hook. Stuff with fiberfill using crochet hook to stuff hard to reach areas. Blind stitch openings closed.
Satin Stitch: Knot one end of floss. Following Fig. 1, come up at odd numbers and go down at even numbers with the stitches touching but not overlapping.
