Salmon  Crisis  in  Chile

Sanitary  Crisis  2007-‐2009   Growth

Lack  of   coordina1on

Intensive  use   of  resources

Low  Sanitary   investment

Bio-‐security

§ Growth:  High  rates  of  growth  without  a  suitable  sanitary  and  produc1ve  planning.  Industry  grew  at   a  CAGR  of  40%  in  the  period  1994  -‐  2007.   § Intensive   use   of   resources:   Excessive   pressure   on   the   fresh   water   systems   (rivers   and   lakes)   and   certain  sectors  of  the  sea,  especially  the  zones  of  Chiloé    Central  in  the  X  region  and    Melinca  in  the   XI  region.   §   Increase  of  facili1es  by  geographic  area   §   Increase  of  size  of  the  facili1es   §   Con1nuous  produc1on  without  rest  periods  between  produc1ve  cycles  (as  much  in  fresh  water   as  water  of  sea)   § Lack  of  coordina1on:  between  producing  companies  (treatments,  use  of  concessions,  etc.)     § Low   Sanitary   investment:   in   assets   that   guarantee   high   standard   of   bio-‐security,   like:   hatcheries   of   complete   cycle,   ports,   closed   wellboats,   silos   for   mortality   treatment,   plants   of   storing,   systems   of   disinfec1on,  etc.   § Bio-‐security:   Lack   of   rigorous   regula1ons   and   prac1ces   by   Sernapesca   and   private   companies   (import  of  eggs)     Document control number
