Reteach Identify Patterns in Multiplication “Shady Multiplication”

Teacher note: In this Reteach, students will roll number cubes to make a multiplication fact. Then they will shade arrays on a grid to show the multiplication fact both ways, displaying the commutative property of multiplication. Group size: two groups Materials: grid, transparency page 29; number cubes; 2 overhead markers Before class: Gather materials. Directions: • Place the grid, transparency page 29, on the overhead. • The team with the shortest member goes first. • Each group will select a different-colored overhead marker for shading the grid. • Each group will take turns rolling the number cubes. • One group will roll first. The two numbers shown on the cubes will make a multiplication fact. A group member will shade in rectangle spaces on the grid to make an array that looks like a rectangle to match the multiplication fact. Then another group member will shade rectangles to form an array showing the other way the fact can be written. (Ex: You rolled a 2 and a 3. You write 2 x 3 and 3 x 2. Then shade in a 2 x 3 rectangle and a 3 x 2 rectangle.) Example:
• The students that formed the rectangles must verbalize the two number sentences they have represented and give the product. • The next group will roll the cubes and repeat this process. • When there aren’t enough rectangle spaces left to shade, play stops. The group with the most squares shaded wins.
