GREETINGS Dear Parents, Caregiver and Families We have had a very busy term 1 and it started very with a significant increase in the school roll. The roll at the 27-February was 327. This reflection increases in the Primary School and in the Secondary School for both day and boarding students. We have particularly welcomed the year seven students who are new to the high school. We must congratulate Lazarus Edwards and Tullia Wilson who were awarded a Scholarship (to the value of $1,400 each) towards their education and costs associated with their courses. We also have seen 4 students travel to Geelong in Victoria for an exchange with Geelong College. By the time you will have read this, Easter will have passed. It is important for us to recall that we are all children of God the almighty creator. The spirit of Christ was placed into man in the form of Jesus. Good Friday is the day we remember his death and Easter Sunday is when we celebrate his resurrection. His example is that when the physical body dies, each of us have the choice to rise up to eternal life. May God bless you and your children this Easter and always. Blessings, Chris England Principal
Congratulations Lazarus Edwards Larina Wilson

I've come back to Shalom after two years away teaching in South America. This is where I trained to be a teacher. It was where I got my first teaching job. I feel like I've come back to a family. The Shalom family. Some of the boys I taught back in 2011 and 2012 are now young warriors. I feel proud to see them. They've become leaders in the school. They are the future leaders of their communities. I'm a long way from home, Jersey, Channel Islands. That's where I was born. A little rock in the sea between England and France in Europe. I came to Australia to study to be a teacher. I worked as a journalist before that. Wrote for my local paper back home. I'd love to start a student blog or paper here at Shalom. Lots of great things are happening. In the classroom. On the sports field. All around the school. I'd like to give our students the chance to become reporters and photographers. Maybe we could start this in 2015. While attending the Laura Festival with Shalom in 2011, I was adopted by a Yolngu family from Dhalinbuy, north east Arnhem. I feel honoured to be part of an Aboriginal family. I have a skin name. Totems. An identity. Though I am called a teacher, I am here to learn. From the students. The community elders and staff who work here. About the oldest, richest cultures in the world. It's awesome being back at Shalom Christian College. APRIL 2015

Circle of Brotherhood
C
ircle of Brotherhood: The concept of school bonding captures the connections students
experience at school; the extent which they feel cared for and respected by their teachers and peers. The “Circle of Brotherhood” for Year 7 boys was initiated to promote positive engagement and involvement in the school environment. Uncle John and Tom were the creators of this program which cultivates the balance between cultural and academic aspects within a learning environment and also to promote cultural resilience among young students. When asked what inspired them to draw up this program, Uncle John Morgan said “I wanted to improve the cultural security, safety and awareness among all students which impacts student’s behaviour and attendance”. Uncle Tom said “The activities in the program allow students to lead by example and take responsibility for their actions”. In a nutshell, the program unpacks the “Shalom Way” to better engage students to produce positive outcomes. Counsellor Raj, Community Liaison Officers Tom David and John Morgan

Circle of Brotherhood Pledging to look after one another in and out of class and maintain the bond of brotherhood
Cultural resiliency is absorbed by students who learn in an environment that is supportive, challenging and involving. The innate potential of each student is believed in and nurtured, and the wellbeing of staff as much as students is fostered through a health-promoting environment. Activities such as cultural dance and art work are done to foster this.

WACKY WEDNESDAY
W
acky Wednesday
Secondary had their first ‘Wacky Wednesday’ celebration in Week 4, where students dressed up in their favourite sports team’s colours. There were Geelong Cats, Sydney Rabbitohs and Chicago Bulls fans mixed in with some overseas favourites such as Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. Students enjoyed a pancake brunch with platters of fresh fruit followed by a BBQ lunch. Activities included a number of allergy sensitive ‘Lime and Spoon’ races, and finishing off the activities with a staff vs student tug of war. The day proved to be a great way to celebrate what has been a positive and exciting start to the school year for Shalom secondary students.

Shalom Christian College – Geelong Journey
O
n sunny Sunday 22nd of March, 5 Shalom students (Alita Harris, Litisha Baker, Curtis Parry, Bethanie Gondarra and Jodine Daisy) as well as Tom Baker our super supportive supervisor arrived at Brisbane at 10am, then hopped back on the plane to the destination of Melbourne. After arriving we went to watch the Geelong Cats vs Carlton AFL match. It was pretty cold but also a warm kind of weather at the Etihad AFL Stadium. Geelong beat Carlton by an amazing score of 111-97, it was a pretty long game but we managed to survive the game all the way through. After the footy game we travelled back to Geelong College.
Litisha Baker, Bethanie Gondarra, Mrs Hughes, Tom Hughes, Jodine Daisy, Alita Harris, Curtis Parry.
The boys would stay at the Mackie House while the girls were staying at the Mossgiel House.
T
he next morning was very cold and rainy, as we went to the Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre for most of the day learning about the traditional area and we were situated in. Raymond, from Alice Springs NT, is an aboriginal artist/worker at Narana and had been teaching us more about the land we were sitting on and taught us some important information in which we should know of the Aboriginal people of this land. We talked about culture with the Geelong students who were also there as part of the program. After all the listening and wondering around the Narana walking tracks we admired the emu’s that were kept in Narana. Narana had so many beautiful Aboriginal paintings that were very special from all over the country of Australia. It was a good day, and we ended with a lovely rest at the end of it. On Tuesday, we went back to the wonderful sights of Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre and summarised what we talked about yesterday. We did some dot painting on clap sticks with the Geelong students and we were bonding with a huge barbarque. From there we met some refugees and threw some boomerangs together, it was fun and heaps of smiles and laughs were everywhere in the air. In the afternoon, we travelled by a Geelong minivan bus to a little town nearby called Torquay. Down the beach we went to have some lunch and to admire the big view of the bottom of Australia. On Wednesday we travelled by bus to Melbourne at about 9:00am in the morning, it took us about 45mins just to travel from Geelong to Melbourne. The journey felt long but we managed to make it in a short period of time. As soon as we arrived in Melbourne we had a huge walk to the MCG, then off to the Federation Square. That place had a very big screen which could see everyone’s beautiful faces who ever walked in front of it. Then to the Eureka Tower we went to “Survive The EDGE”, it was a big glass box we had to stand in, we all had heaps of gut full of fear but we managed to “survive”. We had lunch after the Eureka Tower activity and then took the long drive back to Geelong College with the rest of the students.

n Thursday, we met up at 9:00am again and went to the Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre again to have some hot chocolate and warm ourselves up before the big day of surfing began.
At 10:30am we went to Breamlea Beach and got suited for surfing. The day was pretty windy but was also warm, we loved it. After the hardcore surfing we had lunch and took off back to Narana for some more hot chocolate and to get warmed up before we can go back to the Mackie & Mossgiel Houses. Friday 27th March 2015, we joined Geelong College’s gathering for their Easter Service of 2015. Then we had morning tea and meeting up with the Students and went to library to exchange our stories. BOARDING
T
erm 1 – Boarding
We had a full house this term in the girls dorms. Every bed was slept in and this was a great development. With the heat is also led to air conditioners being put into the White and Green dorms, so the future will be better with some good sleeping of a night in any weather. It has been a busy time in boarding and some of the activities that we have been involved in have included:
watching Geelong play the Gold Coast Suns Seeing home games of the Cowboys NRL team Bouncing on trampolines at Launch Zone Playing ten-pin bowling Roller Skating Hanging out at the Strand Swimming at Riverway
Boarding is never boring! Some great meals have been shared in the dining room and people have made good friends. Shalom boarding is a home away from home, but all the students are looking forward to Easter and being with family, so enjoy your time and see you next term. God bless, Paul Tolliday Head of Boarding

Townsville Eagles Practice Match halom hosted the Townsville Eagles u/16 representative side on Wednesday in Week 7.
A good crowd of the parents of the Eagles as well as many staff members from the school came to support the Shalom side. Unfortunately the boys lost by 20 points, but had a great game with the boys from Eagles and are looking forward to starting the football season.
The Shalom Way:
At Shalom Christian College, we encourage our students to use the three R’s as part of their everyday life, it is what we call The Shalom Way: Respect – for themselves and others Responsibility – knowing the responsibility we have to others to live a caring, Christian life
Rights – always acknowledging the rights of others to be happy and safe in what we do This term, on a Monday morning students have had a chance to explore ways to behave in a way that reflects The Shalom Way, whether this is in the classroom, in church or at football.
While your children are at home, ask them to tell you more about The Shalom Way, Respect, Responsibilities and Rights, and what it means to them.
