She’s Got What It Takes To inspire you on your upcoming ski trip, this week, we are featuring three female skiers who have persevered and worked hard into becoming some of the best skiers in the entire planet! These beautiful and powerful women have been inspiration and motivation to many young aspirants all over the world.
Lindsey Vonn
Considered by many as the best female skier of all time, Lindsey Vonn was just three when she started skiing. Inspired by her grandfather and father who were both great skiers, she started joining local competitions at 7 and proceeded to international contests at 9. From the beginning she always had the makings of an extraordinary athlete: determined, eager and talented. Support from family by relocating for better slopes from Minnesota to vail and her drive to get better and better, got her internationally acclaimed after winning in Italy at age 14. Just at 15, she finished 26th in the world cup event. A few years later, she finished 6th overall in the world cup. By 2008, despite being held back by multiple injuries, she finally won her first 1st overall.
Today, she has won multiple 1sts not only in the world cup but in the Olympics and other competitions as well. This talented and skilful woman has exemplified what determination and hard world can get you.
Sarah Burke
Sarah Burke is still missed by her fans, friends and family today. She was one of the pioneers of halfpipe skiing and successfully pushed it to become an Olympic event. Born into a family who loves skiing, Sarah has been skiing since she was 5. She and her family pushed hard to get her competing alongside male skiers in the events she was good at. Despite being better than most competition, she was denied to compete due to being female. Sarah fought hard to get women competing in their own halfpipe, slope-style and super-pipe competitions. She encouraged and still encourages many female skiers to have confidence in their capabilities as competitive freestyle skiers who can do anything they put their minds into. She has won many medals in various Opens, the X-games and FIS World Ski Championships. Just 2 years short of the SOCHI Winter Olympic games, after successfully lobbying super-pipe
to become part of the roster of events, she died after suffering a traumatic brain injury practicing in Utah.
Ingrid Backstrom
is a super big mountain skier. She is one of the most popular and most influential big mountain skiers of all time. She has been featured in numerous skiing films and have showcased her extremely amazing talents and skills on the slopes. Now 37, she skis 9 months a year and travels the world going to wild mountains for her to ski. Ask any big mountain skiing fan and Ingrid will surely be on top of their list as their favourites. Steep, probably one of the most popular skiing films of all time, featured Ingrid alongside skiing legends like Coombs and McConkey.
These women are just three of the many female skiers who have helped shape the sport as we know it today. They have inspired countless of young hopefuls to go for their dreams and keep working hard. If you are one of them, go! Take it one ski trip at a time.
