For over 20 years Welcome Neighbor! has helped new residents learn about their new community.

“One day I was teasing with the kids while they were doing the crafts. I’d say, ‘Does an alligator comb his hair?’ and they’d all laugh,” she said. “I thought to myself, that would be a cool coloring book.” Schmacker sat down and created rhymes that she then paired with her favorite animals “that could compliment and show the best of my drawing ability.” “Instead of all the rhymes being funny, I wanted to touch on important things that the kids were learning, and need to learn, at this age,” she said. Even though writing isn’t her strength, Schmacker said the process was quite easy. She decided to print the book, “Does Toad Take a Shower?” in black and white not only to make it cheaper to print, but so readers could color the pictures, adding another layer of activity. The book was released in April.

Having experience of working on other books with different scribes made the transition to author and illustrator much smoother for Schmacker. She said writing was “fantastic” in part because it removed one of the most difficult parts of her job. Authors’ words often include so much detail or so many items that it’s difficult for Schmacker to make room for it all. “How in the heck do you get that all on one page and make it eye appealing?” she said of one of her past experiences. “I wrote the words to make it easier for me to do the drawings.” Schmacker’s newest book, “The Iowa State Fair with Pippy the Pig!,” was released earlier this month and is a collaboration with author Lori Ferris. Since 2008, she and Schmacker have produced three books, all starring Pippy the Pig and her adventures in

Iowa. The work with Ferris is Schmacker’s first time working on a series, and it has presented some distinct challenges. “You want each page to look fresh and new and not boring, but you still have to include Pippy on every page,” she said. Right now, Schmacker’s next goal is trying to expand her partnership with Ferris and bring it up north, doing a series on Minnesota, Schmacker’s adopted home. The pair is reaching out to financers, trying to gauge interest in creating a new set of books and Schmacker is excited and open to suggestions. “I’ve already got the title picked out: “Discover Minnesota with Millie the Moose!” she said. What is your favorite part of the holidays? Having family together and good food. What is your favorite thing to do in Prior Lake during the winter? My kids all snowboard and we used to love to go sledding. Now that my kids are older,
