Easy way to clean up in a snap
I
Living Room * Go to the sofa and turn the pillows to the side that is not often facing outward. Consider this the “company side” that may not have any stains or mars in the fabric. Fluff the pillows to clear out dust. * Use a handheld vacuum to clean up any crumbs or dirt on tables or in the sofa cushions. * Wipe down coffee tables with a damp cloth to clear away dust and fingerprints. * Wet the fingertips of rubber gloves and glide your hand over upholstery to rid furniture of pet hair. * Keep a basket handy to neatly store newspaper, magazines or books. * Gather and remove the most obvious clutter and relocate it elsewhere less noticeable. * Dim the lights and light candles. It’s harder to spot dirt in a dim room.
t’s the season for spring cleaning, and homeowners no doubt have a slew of projects on tap in the weeks to come. Clothes will be sorted and donated and unnecessary items thrown in the trash. Sometimes, however, there’s little time for a thorough cleaning, so a quick tidying up is done when guests are coming to visit. There are many ways to tackle the clutter and get a home presentable in no time at all. When you’re short on time, consider these ways to give living spaces the appearance of cleanliness. Kitchen * Assess the kitchen sink and move all the dishes awaiting washing into the dishwasher. Wipe down the inside of the sink with a disinfecting wipe or a clean sponge. * Wipe down the countertops quickly with a wipe or sponge. Wet a paper towel or rag and attack any errant spots on the stove and floor, which will become sticky and attract more dirt. * Fold or hang dish towels in a way that camouflages any stains. * Place a small pan of water on the stove with some nutmeg and cinnamon and bring to a simmer. This will disguise any smells lingering from last night’s dinner. * Take down magnets and notes stuck to the refrigerator and temporarily place them in a zipper-seal bag. * Use a static-charged sweeper sheet to grab any hairs, dust or pet fur from the floor.
Bathroom * A premoistened wipe can quickly clean the sink and counters from dried-on contact solution or toothpaste. * The same wipe can be used to rid the mirror of errant spots of splatter. * Use the same cloth to wipe down the toilet seat and the rim underneath. Use the toilet brush to scrub inside the bowl to remove any rings. * Put new hand towels on racks or on the counter. * Glide a lint roller over the bath mat to remove hair and fuzz.

Create an easy-care garden to add curb appeal I
T is true that a front garden, or an array of planters on a porch or balcony, will add to the appeal of your home among potential buyers. “Selling a home in the summer months requires more attention to your outdoor spaces,” says JoAnn Jusdanis, broker-owner with Royal LePage Burloak Real Estate Services in Burlington, Ontario. “But there are ways to make short work of garden chores.” Here’s how to create a lowmaintenance garden to carry you through the selling season: • Easy container gardens. Use a variety of shapes and sizes of planted containers for a charming look around entrance ways or on a balcony. Plant urns with a variety of tall, medium and trailing plants. • Drought-tolerant plants. Choose annuals that require less watering such as zinnias and marigolds. Perennials offer the hardiest choices. Check websites for suggestions and ask at your local garden centre for recommendations on droughttolerant plants for your area. • Condition your soil. To promote lavish growth, add an organic substance to your soil, such as manure or compost. Testing your soil will help identify excessive sand, clay or elements that contribute to or take away from soil acidity. • Incorporate perennials for easy care. Choose perennials as the backbone of your garden then add colour as needed with a selection of drought-resistant annuals. • Don’t forget to fertilize. Periodically, you’ll need to “feed” your plants. Fertilizing will keep them healthy, robust and promote consistent flowering. An easy-care garden will create the curb appeal needed to impress potential buyers of your home. 2016 decorating trends for the master bedroom I S it time to bring your bedroom’s style into this decade? Or perhaps you’d soon like to take on a really exciting renovation project? Then let yourself be inspired by the latest trends and give your bedroom a makeover worthy of the classiest home decor magazines. Beds play a starring role The central element of any master bedroom has to be the bed. For a trendy look, opt for a model with a padded headboard, with sleek, industrial-style metallic lines, or in a rustic or Scandinavian style. Note that four-poster beds are also very up-to-theminute. Just make sure you can leave 30-60 cm between the top of the structure and the ceiling in order to avoid overpowering the room. The bedding Dress up your bed with fluffy, voluminous bedding. Choose classic fabrics; linen, which has a soft texture and amazing durability, is a great choice. It wrinkles easily, but that’s
part of its charm. To find the kind of bedding that will make all the difference in your revamped bedroom, shop around in your local stores. And don’t forget that vibrant herringbone patterns are very fashionable this year, and no, they aren’t just for kids. Lighting Add some character to your bedroom with an unusual light fixture in the middle of the ceiling; make sure it works with a dimmer switch. Gold, silver and bronze models are all very “in” this year; however, chandeliers always look great in the master bedroom. When matched appropriately to the decor, they add a wonderfully classic touch.

Create an oasis of fragrance
F
or most people convenience is the priority when designing and positioning a patio or a deck. A simple way to boost the surroundings of your outdoor living area is to place beside it a number of flowering shrubs, perennial or annual flowers, or fragrant herbs. Not only will you enjoy being in the heart of your own little natural haven, you’ll also be able to enjoy the beautiful scents that drift from your plants. The fresh scents emanating from a bed of thyme and lavender will make your morning coffee twice as enjoyable, and you’ll soon discover that these fragrances bring a new dimension to the way you see your yard. Choosing fragrant plants does not mean compromising on the beauty of your flower garden. Rather, it adds a sensual note that is always welcome. Popular choices among
these plants are daphne, honeysuckle, jasmine, lily of the valley, and nicotiana. Some plants have a strong scent, such as seringat (also known as mock orange), while others are much subtler, such as viburnum. Placing strongly scented plants together is not recommended. The creation of a fragrant paradise is really quite easy, as there is a wide range of plants to choose from. Just remember that one’s perception of flowering scents is similar to one’s appreciation of wine: it is, above all, a question of what you like. Keep in mind that the fragrance of a plant or flower can vary depending on soil type, time of day, and temperature. Breezes are another factor, as they dissipate fragrances. In order to enjoy them to the maximum, be sure to cultivate these plants in a sheltered but sunny area.

Creating a garden when you have young children F
or some people, a yard is something to be manicured and admired. For others, it is simply a place to let the dog run loose or send the kids out to play. A well thought out yard, however, can combine both the aesthetic and the practical, making it a place where adults can relax and children can play. Designing a yard with children in mind requires good planning, not only because they will need a play area but because flowerbeds must be situated in clearly designated areas or else be planted with hardy flowers that can withstand little trampling feet and runaway balls. Don’t opt for thorny plants and bushes, such as roses and berberis, as they can hurt if handled the wrong way. It’s a good idea to abandon a pond project if your children are still very young, especially if you’d planned a fairly deep one. A small fountain would be
preferable, at least until the children are older. Toxic plants should also be avoided. Touching or swallowing this type of plant could lead to poisoning or digestive, skin, or respiratory problems. Flowers that do not pose any threat to your children include gardenias, geraniums, impatience, marigolds, petunias, and roses. Toxic plants include azaleas (rhododendrons), begonias, caladiums, chrysanthemums, daffodils, hyacinths, hydrangeas, irises, morning glories, laurel, lily of the valley, periwinkle, and poinsettia. A well designed garden might also include a safe play area for the children and a comfortable deck or gazebo, where all the family will love to get together for meals.
Don’t forget your children when planning the layout of your garden.

Is your home ready for spring?
B
EFORE welcoming the spring weather with open arms, there are a few essential jobs you need to do in order to take care of your biggest investment: your home. 1. Carefully examine the foundation for possible cracks, water infiltration or signs of moisture. If any foundation walls appear to be damaged in any way, have them repaired immediately by
a professional repair service. 2. Have your heating system inspected and serviced by a qualified technician. March is also the perfect time to clean your fireplace or wood stove. And don’t forget to have the chimney swept as well. 3. Check the gutters and make sure the water from melting snow drains as far away as possible from
the foundation walls. If necessary, unblock gutters and downspouts, tighten loose joints and affix all parts securely to the house. 4. Have your French drains inspected, as they often take a lot of punishment over the winter. You definitely want to be sure they are working properly in order to avoid water infiltration and unpredictable overflows from your sump pit.

2. Throw out expired food products Inspect the contents of your fridge and freezer twice a month and throw out any food products that have passed their expiry date. By the way, did you know that most meat should be eaten within eight months of freezing? When it comes to your fridge, it is best not to wait for bad smells to show up before you clean.

A trellis in the garden gives warm look T
rellises are amazingly versatile and decorative elements in any yard. They can be used as supports for climbing plants, as separating screens to create interesting perspectives in the yard, and as decorative features on unattractive walls. Professional landscape gardeners love using trellises to create architectural features. A wide range of trellises in various styles and materials is available at garden centres. Alternatively, creative gardeners can produce their own beautiful trellises by recuperating old items to transform into supports, such as wood doors, window frames, and even an assortment of vine shoots. Wood trellises are widely available and have a warm and natural look. They also have the advantage of being able to blend
in to all styles of garden. Bamboo trellises are growing in popularity and add a touch of originality and exoticism. Finally, metal trellises are noted for their durability and elegance. They are often made to measure, which allows for the possibility of crafting some truly original creations. Metal can be painted and is particularly well suited to the romantic style of garden, where they are ideal for setting off roses and various climbing plants. A word of advice: avoid installing a trellis directly on a wall of your home. Affix it to a wood frame beforehand in order to create a space of about 10 centimetres between the trellis and the wall. This will facilitate air circulation and prevent your plants from becoming diseased or mildewed.
Wood trellises are widely available and have a warm and natural look.
Trellises have many different uses in the yard, where they can showcase climbing plants or create some privacy.

A container garden M
ost gardeners who grow vegetables do so in the rich earth of their backyards. But what can you do if you don’t have that kind of space available? A container gardens is an increasingly popular solution, one that also adds to the beauty of your yard. In fact, gardeners throughout his-
tory have been growing flowers, herbs, and ornamental plants in all kinds of pots. Some vegetables, such as lettuce and tomatoes, give very good results. The roots of these vegetables adapt well to the confines of a small space and develop quickly. As soon as you have mastered the art of growing simple
plants, you could try more challenging vegetables. Squash and cucumbers, for example, flourish in large pots. Some varieties of squash are also quite decorative with their big yellow flowers. Herbs adapt particularly well to containers, and some of them will be able to be brought inside for winter. In some ways, container gardening is even simpler than gardening directly in the ground, due in large part to the fact that no weeding is required. The drawback to a container garden is that it will need to be watered at least once a day, or even more during hot weather. Also keep in mind that pots must be big enough for roots to develop properly, and of course that will depend on the kind of vegetable you’re growing. Self-watering containers can be a help for forgetful gardeners, as they have built-in water reservoirs that allow plants access to water whenever necessary. This type of container is available at garden centres and hardware or department stores. Don’t forget that vegetables grown in pots, particularly tomatoes, will need to be fed on a regular basis.

Ediblef lowers P
eople often make the mistake of thinking that eating flowers is a whim of fancy of modern chefs. The opposite is true, however. Flowers have embellished royal meals as far back as the Middle Ages. In fact, there’s nothing like a few pretty and colourful flowers on a plate to add whimsy, flavour, and fragrance to your meal. Not just any kind of flower can be used as an edible garnish. Some are quite toxic. Take petunias, for example. This flowering plant can seem appetizing, especially as it is easy to grow and flowers abundantly throughout the summer. But don’t let yourself be tempted! Petunias will make you ill. Before sprinkling petals over your meal, it’s essential to find out if the flower you’re interested in is in facte dible. The edible flowers that can be found in our gardens include nasturtiums, pansies, and monarda, all great in salads. Meadowsweet, or queen-of-the-meadow, makes wonderful herbal infusions. Impatiens walleriana, or busy Lizzy, is perfect as a garnish. Hostas are wonderful in salads, cooked as a vegetable, or even crystallized. Hosta flowers are also a delight to discover, particularly the H. fortunei variety. Violets are a treat when used to flavour butters or vinegars or infused in a syrup to accompany ice-cream — a real, delicatet reat! It goes without saying that pesticides should never be used on garden flowers that
will be used in the kitchen. Harvest the flowers in the morning when the dew has evaporated, remove the stamens, and wash them very carefully without rubbing the petals. Leave them to dry in a cool place and add them to your dish at the last minute.
Many flowers can be eaten, but just as many are extremely toxic. Make sure you know which to use.

Build a great deck with a solid plan A
RELAXING deck gives you the great outdoors without the need to venture too far from the comforts of home. When done right, a deck improves the appearance and utility of your home and can add to its resale value. Lincoln Thompson, broker-owner with Royal LePage Gardiner Realty in Fredericton, New Brunswick advocates that homeowners pay special attention to the plan for any new deck. “To ensure the structure enhances your property, both now and in the future, a good design and quality materials should be your guiding principles,” he says. Whether you plan to build it yourself or hire a contractor, Thompson suggests you ponder these questions: How will you use your deck? Consider the activities you typically do outdoors and how a deck could make them more enjoyable. Barbecuing? Sunning and lounging? Supervising the children at play? Enjoying nature? Setting off a pool or spa? How can you enhance your house and yard? A deck usually sits against your house and alters the landscape of your yard. Always keep the surroundings in mind and consider the combination of visual elements. Think about the view from the deck, and if it is raised, how it will look from ground level. How large and what shape? The deck should suit the scale of your house and yard. Going too large or too wide for the space can visually overwhelm and detract from the setting. Avoid a plain, boxy rectangle by adding interesting angles or changing the orientation. What materials will you use? Cedar and redwood are popular choices, but for the budget-minded, look for pressure-treated pine and select your pieces with care. Composite deck materials are growing in popularity in some areas. With careful attention to your needs and landscape, a deck creates a welcome transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces. And, it might clinch the deal when it comes time to sell. 2016 decorating trends
Tips for a state-of-the-art kitchen D
OES your kitchen need refurbishing? Would you love to create a cuttingedge decor worthy of a decorating magazine? Draw on as many of the 2016 trends as you like and turn your kitchen into a beautiful — and functional — room that’s ideal for dreaming up mouth-watering meals for family and friends. Gasps of admiration, guaranteed. Clean lines With its cool colours and clean lines, the 2016 kitchen has the esthetic of a laboratory, but in a good way. Islands, cabinets and countertops have smooth, gleaming surfaces on which a bare minimum of objects are placed. Similarly, storage space is optimized so all the things you don’t have an immediate use for can stay out of sight. The key word: minimalism.
or for storage. To be really up to date, furnish your kitchen with a model that has been custom designed and made by a professional. What’s the ultimate island in 2016? A brightly coloured one (bottle green, orange, electric blue) standing in the centre of a kitchen decorated in classic shades of gray, white, black or beige. You’ll definitely create the “wow” effect!
Nostalgic colours Add pale touches of colour (mint green, pale pink, baby blue, lilac or butter yellow) to neutral kitchens. These pastel shades from decades past are making a comeback this year, while the vintage trend is increasingly popular. Purity, softness and comfort are the magic ingredients for a user-friendly kitchen where everyone loves to hang out. Copper After stainless steel, gold, chrome and bronze, designers are now going crazy over copper. To give your kitchen a modern-yet-warm feel, integrate a few elements with a copper finish or even better, solid copper. This year, copper cabinet handles and knobs, light fixtures, faucets, utensils and even appliances blend perfectly with anthracite, brown and ivory tones. Custom islands Today’s kitchen island is no longer used exclusively for preparing meals. Now it has been transformed into a multi-purpose element that’s used as an extra table

Does your roof need repairing? S
PRING has arrived and we’re finally enjoying some warm weather. However, the long, cold winter may have damaged parts of your home, including the roof. Now is the time to find out exactly what needs to be repaired. Here are a few tips to guide you in the right direction. Look for clues Use your “eagle eyes” to check for signs of damage to your roof. Don’t stand on the roof to do this; not only could you further damage it but you could also fall and seriously injure yourself. Your best bet is to look from the ground or from second floor windows, if you can see from there.
If checking your roof seems impossible from your yard, there is still the option of asking a neighbour’s permission to check your roof from their highest windows. Remember to take your binoculars with you. Here are the seven main signs to look for: 1. Moss-like vegetation growing on the roof. 2. Flashings (metal waterproofing strips) that are rusty, damaged or even missing. 3. Nail heads sticking out. 4. The attic insulation seems damp or wet. 5. Shingles look as if they’re undulating,

curling, disintegrating or losing pieces. 6. Condensation in the attic. 7. Stains or mould on the ceiling or roof trusses. Call in an expert If you’ve answered “yes” to any of the above questions, you should talk to a roofing contractor to find out exactly what kind of work is required. After that, any repair or replacement work can be done. Remember that roofing requires special expertise; only professionals can guarantee lasting work of superior quality.
