FedEx plans $33M expansion in Pflugerville

FedEx Ground will expand and consolidate its offices into a new $33 million, 250,000-square-foot building at 130 Commerce Center in Pflugerville. The expansion will move the company’s existing offices from a 50,000-square-foot building on Pflugerville’s Royston Lane and make the new location the largest FedEx Ground facility in Central Texas. The company plans to hire 25 to 35 additional part-time workers at an average annual salary of $25,000 within the next four years as part of the expansion, the Pflugerville Community Development Corp. said in a release. Moon Township, Pa.-based FedEx Ground is a subsidiary of Memphis-based logistics company FedEx (NYSE: FDX). When fully completed, FedEx will employ a total of of 120 drivers and warehouse employees at the Pflugerville location. Full-time employees earn an average annual salary of $40,00. The 130 Commerce Center, which sits at the corner of SH 130 and Pecan Street in Pflugerville, was selected for its easy access to SH 130, the PCDC said Wednesday in its announcement of the deal. “It is crucial to FedEx that their trucks carrying shipments are able to get [out of] Austin at 4 p.m. weekdays to deliver packages to business in Dallas and San Antonio,” said PCDC Executive Director Floyd Akers in a statement. “But the traffic on IH-35 in Austin at this time of day is at a standstill.” Scannell Properties, which develops and owns FedEx locations across the U.S., closed on the 33-acre tract of land March 4. The land was previously owned by the development corp., which reported a $2 million net profit on the sale of the land. No incentives were provided to FedEx other than a discounted land price, the PCDC stated. The city of Pflugerville projects tax revenue from the project of $173,000 annually. Scannell will oversee the construction of the facility and lease the building to FedEx. Water-slideshow: Sneak peek at Hawaiian Falls near Austin It’s perhaps one of the biggest economic development deals for the North Austin suburb of Pflugerville, and it’s certainly the biggest project ever undertaken by Hawaiian Falls Waterparks. More than $23 million is being invested to bring the water park to fruition. It’s scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend — in less than three weeks — but executives said Thursday the opening may be delayed until June. As construction crews worked at a feverish pace, the company invited the public to check out the site still under construction.
