These instructions explain how to fit shutters outside a window recess. Some windows, for example sash windows, do not have a recess so the shutters must be face-fitted to the window frame or the window surround. There are other reasons for choosing to have your shutters fitted in this way, for example the recess of your window may not be square. Important: fitting shutters to the outside of your window is the ONLY option if your recess is less than 40mm deep or if your windows open into the room.
Before getting started Is anything in the way? Check for obstructions that are going to cause problems when it comes to fitting or operating your shutters, for example a picture rail or obstructions around the window such as pictures or wall units or cupboards.

Your measurements need to include space for the frame you choose for your shutters. Refer to our ‘Guide to Frame Types’ for more information on choosing the right frame for you. To help get your measurements right, we suggest using the cut-out templates that you will find at the end of this document. Cut out and tack the template of the frame you will be ordering to your window in the exact position you want your shutter to fit. Make sure there is enough space all around the window and there are no obstacles in the way.

Now use a spirit level to check that this position is square. Measure across this width from left to right and make a note of the measurement. Now measure the drop from top to bottom and make a note of the measurement.
These are the two basic measurements you’ll need to order your full height shutter without a midrail. We may need a few more measurements depending upon the type of shutters you are ordering.
You will receive a call from our Customer Service Team to confirm the following information:
Full height shutters with a midrail
measure
This style of shutter is available with a midrail. This will allow you to open the louvres above and below the midrail independently of each other. If your window has a height of 180cm or more, your full height shutter must have a midrail. Although the midrail can be positioned anywhere on the shutter, we recommend it mirrors the features of your window. Take a measurement from the bottom of where you want your shutter to fit to the middle of the point you decide upon for your midrail.

Please bear in mind that our shutter slat sizes are fixed. So the position of your midrail may be slightly higher or slightly lower than the point you measured to. This difference will only ever be half a slat width.

Café style shutters Take your drop measurement from the bottom of where you want to fit your shutter up to exactly where you want your shutter to finish. This can be at any point on the window but we would recommend it reflects the features of your window.
