“Lead Us Not into Temptation” E x tra c ts fro m M r. F illm o re’s S u n d a y m orning ta lk in U n ity A u d ito rium , J a n u a ry 22, 1911. I n religion th e re are two g re a t classes of people— those who accept w ithout ques tio n w h at is w ritte n in th e books and h an d ed dow n by th e church fa th e rs , and those who inquire into th e do ctrin e and m ake a stu d y of T r u th .' W e belong to th e .la tte r class. W e desire to know , to u n d e r stand. W e a re ta u g h t to p ra y w ith the S p irit, an d also w ith th e u n d ersta n d in g . T h is m o rn in g we consider th a t p a r t of the L o rd ’s P ra y e r re fe rrin g to tem p tatio n . T h is read s, in our common version, “h e a d us n ot into te m p ta tio n ,” as if th e L o rd w ere in th e h ab it of lead in g us into evil and th en p u n ish in g us fo r it. T h e Infin ite In tellig en c e is ju s t as open to our m inds as a ir is to our lu n g s, and is in sp ire d or b rea th ed in th e sam e w ay. T h e S p irit is om nipresent. T h is A ll-p erv ad in g O m nipotent W ord w ill, if believed in an d m ade the p o in t of con cen tratio n , quicken th e u n d erstan d in g . T h e n le t us still our m inds a n d ask th e g re a t A ll-in fo rm in g M in d to reveal to us th e m eaning of “ L ea d us not into te m p ta tion. . I n th e L o rd ’s p ra y e r, as given in th e K in g Ja m es version, we read , “ L ead us n o t into te m p ta tio n .” In th e version of 1870 th is passage is tra n sla te d , “ B rin g us

ye sh all find.” T h e re are no u n fath o m able m ysteries in D iv in e M ind. G od is th e sum to ta l of all we see in ourselves and in th e universe. T h a t sum to ta l is n ot a p erso n al m an, b u t all ideas th a t en ter into creation. A definite idea lies back of every act. B ack of a ll action is th e L ife Id ea. T h e re a re other ideas asso ciated w ith it: one is w isdom , one is love, one p o w er; an d so we m ight go on and nam e all the qualities th a t a re m an ifest in D ivine M ind as ideas. T h e g re a t infinite M ind m ust use these ideas, an d th is it does th ro u g h m an. T h e id e n tity of m an is m ade u p of all th a t he is conscious of, an d back of all is th e O ne M in d p u sh in g him to use m ore and m ore its life an d sub stance an d intelligence. M an, th e individual I A m , has the pow er to disassociate these ideas of life, love, wisdom, pow er, etc., w'hich he draw s from D ivine M ind, an d in th is w ay he form s vortices of force an d sensation th a t engulf him. I t is from th e vortex of his own sensual use of th e D ivine G ood th a t he p ra y s release. G od is not a m an, b u t th e P rin c ip le back of m an. A p ec u lia r q u ality of every individual is caution. M oses had to say rep e ate d ly to th e ch ild ren of Is ra e l, “ G o fo rw a rd .” W e find from th e very beginning of histo ry th is ten dency in th e hum an race to be conservative an d r e ta rd pro g ress. T h is m akes a p u sh and a p u ll in consciousness, fo r th e D ivine M in d is ever p u sh in g fo r w ard , p ressin g from w ith in fo r a fu lle r expression of its ideas. A ll action is th e re su lt of th e L ife Id ea. I f we th in k of th is idea alone we w ill be led into sensation, illusion. W h en the

ideas o f D iv in e M in d a re ex p ressed in rig h t rela tio n th e re is a p e rfe c t balan ce and th e righteousness of th e O ne M in d is fulfilled. N o idea, no fa c u lty m ust be ignored , so it is n o t wise to go off on a ta n g e n t w ith one idea. T h is is w h at causes people to become lo st in sensation. T h ey revel in th e expression of life w ith out b alan cin g it w ith wisdom. O th ers have lo st out along th e love id e a ; still others a re n eg lectin g to ex p ress pow er, an d th e ir m a ste ry an d dom inion is not realized . I t is n ot as if th e re w ere a p erso n al G od p u sh in g us into sin ; b u t we find ourselves u rg ed by these D iv in e ideas to ex p ress along a ll lin es, an d n ot know ing th e h ig h er law of th e rig h t use of th ese forces we find ourselves in seem ing tem p tatio n . “ D eliv er us from th e evil one.” T h is evil one is th e h um an ego, th e p erso n a lity , th e m an of lim ited ideas. T h e w ay to be delivered fro m him is to g et into th e U niversal.- T h e r e .is a la rg e r w o rld th a n th a t you live in. I t is said th a t in w hat a p p e a rs a sm all speck in a c e rta in s ta rry constellation th e re are th re e th o u sa n d suns la rg e r th a n ours. J u s t th in k of th e im m ensity of th e u niverse an d com pare it w ith th e littlen ess of th is p la n e t an d of your w orld. A t th e sam e tim e all of th e p o te n tia lities o f th e u n iv erse a re in you. G od has p u t into you a ll th a t is in th e b la zin g suns of glory. D oes it n ot m ake y o u r w o rld m uch la rg e r to le t go of th e lim ited ideas an d en te r into th e consciousness of y o u r re lation to th e U n iv ersa l M in d ? E v ery m an can have an y ran g e of th o u g h t he desires. I f th e re is lack in an y re sp e c t he can d raw from th e U n iv ersa l in a la rg e r w ay. I t is th e exercise of th e am bitious ego th a t form s a little w orld. T o it th is little w orld th a t it h as m ade seems th e all of existence. I t w ould m ake itse lf first, an d ru le over others. T h is w as one o f th e te m p tatio n s Je su s m et a f te r th e descen t of th e S p irit. M a n y have fo u n d th a t a f te r th e b ap tism of th e S p irit th e y seem to be in g re a t te m p ta tio n , an d th e y th in k it

W E E K LY U N IT Y stran g e. B u t the im petus from th e g re a t u n iv e rsa l M ind comes in an d stim ulates a ll th e forces o f th e m an. A ll points of th e consciousness m ust be quickened an d raise d to a h ig h er ra te of action. T h is is baptism . W e go th ro u g h th e sam e ex p eriences th a t Je su s C h rist did. A ll of the te m p tatio n s of am bition have to be m et in our consciousness as he m et them in h is; an d especially is th is tru e a f te r an inflow of the S p irit. T h e S p irit m ust ta k e possession of every facu lty , reg e n erate it, an d b rin g it into oneness w ith th e U n i v ersal. T h e hum an fam ily is receiving wave a fte r w ave of sp iritu a l force from th e O ne M in d , th e C e n tra l S un, everyw here p re s ent. As we receive its im petus we feel a p u sh of every pow er, and in th is w ay are te m p te d to use th is new pow er along old lines, n o t acknow ledging and conform ing to th e H ig h e r L aw . So h ere is n ecessary a reg e n erativ e process. I f you a re te m p t ed b y th e p erso n al ego to use th e life fo rce in sensation, ta k e y o u r dom inion an d say N o ! A ll th e forces of m y being shall be lifte d u p an d express in righteousness. I f you are te m p te d to believe in some m a te ria l th in g as th e source of L ife , den y such a th o u g h t an y place in y o u r con sciousness. A ll re a l h ea lin g is in th e m ind. P a tc h in g u p th e body w ith some e x tern al m eans is n o t h ealing, an d no one is th o ro u g h ly h ealed u n til he is reg e n erate d . W hen we come into D ivine M ind we m ust m ake a com plete renunciation. E v e ry te m p ta tio n to ex a lt an d cling to th e p erso n a lity m ust be m et an d overcom e, th a t th e p r a y e r “ D e liv e r us fro m th e evil one” m ay be a n sw ered. We, m ust do ju s t as Je su s did. H e knew how to h an d le th e situation. E v e ry d ay w e a re tested , an d we should p ra y , “ L e a d us n o t into te m p ta tio n , but d eliv er us from th e evil one.” T h e th o u g h t fo r th e noon m eetings from J a n u a r y 2 0 th to F e b ru a ry 2 0 th is as fol low s : “ M y th o u g h t is ever to w ard th e L o rd as m y su p p o rt an d su p p ly , an d he p o u rs out upon me his boundless p le n ty .”
