 Ktunaxa  (pronounced  ‘k-­‐too-­‐nah-­‐ha’)  people  have  occupied   the  lands  adjacent  to  the  Kootenay  and  Columbia  Rivers  and   of Safety anmore  than   the  Arrow  Implementing Lakes  of  BriIsh  Signs Columbia,   Canada  infor   10,000  years.   Aboriginal Community and Agency  

Recognizing and Building Strength and The  TradiIonal  Territory  of  the  Ktunaxa  NaIon  covers  approximately   Safety with  Aboriginal Families in oCrisis 70,000  square   kilometers   within  the  Kootenay   region   f  south-­‐  

eastern  BriIsh  Columbia  and  historically   arts   of  oAf  lberta,   We  have  ifncluded   eatures  for  epvery   step   the  way               Montana,  Washington  and  Idaho.

Culturally  Relevant  Risk  Assessment   From  2008  through  to  today  KKCFSS  has  been  working   toward  uIlizing  the  Signs  of  Safety  Framework  at  all   levels  of  assessment  throughout  the  agency   This  includes  intake  and  invesIgaIon,  safety  (risk)   assessment  and  planning,  care  planning  for  children,  &   working  with  residenIal  caregivers   KKCFSS  no  longer  uses  the  BriIsh  Columbia  Risk   Assessment  Model    

Community  and  Family  Feedback   As  we  used  the  Signs  of  Safety  Approach  more  and  more   in  our  pracIce  we  began  seeking  feedback     Consistently  we  were  hearing  that  this  approach  was  not   only  respecZul  but  it  also  recognized  the  role  of  family   and  community
