Reports A Power BI report is a multi-perspective view into a dataset with visualizations that represent different findings and insights from that dataset. A report can have a single visualization or pages full of visualizations. As the name suggests, Power BI reports give you power over your data to delve deeply to see trends and gaps. Power BI reports can help improve processes, solve business process, and increase return on investment (ROI).

Dashboards A Power BI dashboard is a single-page canvas that uses visualizations to tell a story. A welldesigned dashboard contains only the most-important elements of that story. Click a tab to access a specific dashboard.

Visualizations Visualizations are the way in which data is presented. Visualizations can be line charts, bar and column charts, doughnut charts, and more. The visualizations available are based on how a report/dashboard was created in Power BI. Here are some things you can do with visualizations: •

Hover over a data point to see high-level data at-a-glance

Drill down into a data point to see details

Put a visualization in focus mode

Include/exclude data

See records (detailed data view) and see data (data presented in tabular form)

Icons Icons are your tools for getting things done. They appear when you hover over a visualization. This icon:

Does this:

Note that:

Drills up

These icons are available only if a visualization has a hierarchy.

Drills down all fields at once to the next level Expands all down one level in the data hierarchy

This icon:

Does this:

Note that:

Toggles drill down mode on and off When the icon is dark, drill is enabled. If you don't turn on drill, selecting a visual element (such as a bar or bubble) cross-filters the other charts on the report page and does not drill down. Puts a visualization in focus mode (removes all other visualizations from view) Displays more options: export data, see data, and sort data

Filters Filters remove data from a visualization except for data you want to focus on. Filtering is a great way to remove extraneous data so you can view specific data. Filters vary based on the report. Here are some potential ones: •

Drop-down check boxes (multi-select)

Date sliders (defaults to year-to-date; only "slides" as far as what you have data for)

Filters have actions, which appear when hovering:

This icon: Does this: Opens filter in a larger window so you can see it better Displays more options, which vary by filter. Some options:

 Search  Export data (exports that list of filters into an Excel file)  See data (shows what is to be exported, just that filter list)

 Sort by Clears filter selections

Drill down in a visualization Note: Drill down requires a visualization with hierarchy.

1. On a visualization in the top right corner, click

.

The icon turns dark, which means drill is enabled. Note: If you don't turn on drill, selecting a visual element cross-filters other charts on the page. 2. To drill down one field at a time, click a visual element in your visualization. Alternate method: Right-click a visual element and click Drill Down.

Put visualization in focus mode Note: Putting a visualization in focus mode removes all other visualizations from the page. 1. On a visualization in the top right corner, click

.

The visualization is now in focus. All other visualizations are hidden. 2. Drill down, filter, analyze, or do whatever else to see the data you want.

Filter data in a visualization Note: Filters limit data to give you a more specific view. Filters vary based on the dashboard. 1. On a dashboard on the right side of the page, click a filter or filters. The visualization(s) change based on those filters. 2. To remove a filter, click

.

Hover on a visual element 1. On a dashboard visualization, hover your mouse over a visual element. High-level data is shown like this:

2. Move the cursor from the visual element and the data is no longer shown.

Exclude a visual element 1. On a dashboard visualization, right-click a visual element. 2. Click Exclude. The visual element is excluded (removed) from the visualization.

Include a visual element 1. On a dashboard visualization, right-click a visual element. 2. Click Include. The visual element is included in the visualization. (All other visual elements are excluded.)

See records for a visual element •

See Records option lets you focus on one visual element and drill into the data behind it.

Canvas space shows detailed data without a visual.

Differs from the See Data option, which shows a visual and data in a tabular (summary) form.

1. On a dashboard visualization, right-click a visual element. 2. Click See Records. The canvas shows detailed data for that visual element. It looks something like this:

3. Click a data row to drill down.
