And it was just sitting there, at the Santa Monica Antiques & Collectibles Market, waiting for the right person to buy it. “It’s over 400 years old.” The vendor leaned his elbows on the table to the left. “And I’m asking only $150. Sure, it’s worth more, but if it goes to someone who can sincerely appreciate it, that’s all that matters.” But what is “sincerity”? It’s frank honesty, a selfless respect for something that prompts you to preserve its purity—and a through-line for this issue. exactly replicate hues popular in 18th-century France (page 90). Perhaps “sincerity” is on all our lips because it’s inherent to all our lives. While many antiques are smart investments, we rescue well-worn vintage items and quirky antiques for other reasons: to keep them out of landfills, to honor our history, to pass on our memories. And because, after all, our love for them is truly sincere.
