Abstract

Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) Multi Vessel Operations Guidance for Marine Based Response to Subsea Well Incident Submitted in consideration for presentation SNAME 2014

From July 2011 thru June 2013, Captain Kris Kallaway was a team member to the Joint Industry Project called Subsea Well Response Project (SWRP). During this period he advised on many of the Marine and Dynamic Positioning vessel aspects involved in the scope of work for this project. In addition, he developed an industry-unique Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) Well Containment Guideline to assist subscriber well operators in developing their contingency and response plans. Captain Kallaway will present key drawings that consider phases of work that may or may not be completed during a subsea well response incident which are: 

site survey,

debris clearance,

dispersant injection,

capping,

subsea installation,

containment operations

SIMOPS is a collaborative, risk based mitigation process using a formal written exchange of information between concerned parties or vessels working in close proximity to each other when responding to a marine based source control event. International Marine Contractors Association document (IMCA) M203 and lessons learned from previous industry blowout events were reviewed in the writing of this guideline. Captain Kallaway will discuss how this Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) guideline reduces Marine Operational risk. SIMOPS Technical Questions limited to the drawings – excluding commercial and regulatory topics – will be accepted following that presentation.
