Site Visit to Indus Action’s School Readiness Program

By: Rahul Batra, Asha Stanford Chapter On: Friday, June 10, 2016 I met Indus Action (IA) volunteer Kritika Sangani at Kashmere Gate Metro Station. From there we went to Vivek Modern School (Street no 5, E Block, Subhash Vihar). I attended a couple of student classes in which students (between the ages of 3 and 6) were being taught concepts such as counting by coloring, recognizing basic shapes, connecting words to form complete sentences. Teachers were quite active in the classroom - asking questions, using pictures to explain concepts etc. There was active participation of students in the classrooms. During lunchtime, I spoke with a few teachers to get feedback about the summer camp and working with IA volunteers. The feedback from all the teachers was extremely positive. They mentioned that the training sessions with the IA mentor (which were conducted daily) were really helpful. I attended one such session with the teachers and Kritika. Along with the sessions for students, IA was conducting session for parents of the enrolled students in one of the other school buildings. I attended one such session that was being led by one of the mothers (whose 2 children were enrolled in the camp). The mothers of the enrolled children were also learning the same curriculum as their children. I had a lengthy conversation with one of the mothers. She told me about the difficulties she was facing at home to send her children to school. She told me that she got to know about the Sec 12 of RTE through IA, which was beneficial for securing school admission for one of her children. She was extremely happy to be a part of the summer camp and was impressed by the dedication of the IA volunteers. After the day got over, I went with Kritika and around 10-12 teachers from the school to Tagore Shiksha Niketan in Badarpur to attend a session conducted by Surya Pratap for all the teachers taking part in the summer camp including from the other two schools. Surya is the founder of the organization Re:imagine - IA’s curriculum partner. During the session, few teachers from each school shared about how they were teaching the curriculum to their students. I found their methods to be very innovative and well thought of. One principal from the school mentioned about how she was rewarding the teachers in her school. Surya gave them feedback on how they could improve further. I was extremely impressed with the professionalism and the dedication of the Indus Action volunteers. The teachers and the parents of the enrolled students were extremely happy to have been a part of the summer camp. I am in favor of Asha for Education supporting Indus Action in their future projects.
