Balanced Literacy in English Language Arts We understand that literacy is the ability to make meaning while reading, writing, listening, and speaking in different settings and for different purposes. We will support all students in developing the skills to become competent, independent, purposeful readers, writers, thinkers and communicators. To increase student independence as readers, writers, and speakers, teachers will provide direct modeling, interactive practice, and independent reading/writing/speaking opportunities with complex grade-level texts. To foster stamina, to practice skills and strategies, and to engage students in a literacy-rich culture, teachers will routinely and frequently provide opportunities for students to read books at their independent reading level and to write for different audiences and purposes. To develop specific skills and strategies in reading, writing, and speaking, teachers will provide brief, focused (or mini) lessons with frequent use of complex, grade-level texts.

To address students' individual strengths and learning needs, teachers will create instructional opportunities appropriate for the full spectrum of learners. To foster a developmental understanding of how words and their parts work together and to form meaning, teachers will integrate vocabulary, roots, spelling, grammar, conventions, and word play with reading and writing instruction. To develop effective communication skills in a variety of settings, teachers will structure opportunities for student discourse in a safe, respectful learning environment.
