December President’s Message

December 2014

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us ~ what a wonderful time of the year! The shopping has begun and the decorating is in full swing. We are wrapping presents and cooking/baking like it is going out of style. The month of December is joyous; however, oh so busy. I am exhausted just thinking about getting everything done. I am happy to report that the Harrisburg Chapter continues to have many members that still support our organization and attend our monthly meetings. We even have some new member prospects inquiring about our chapter - which is very exciting! Starting this month, our chapter began supplementing the cost of our monthly Membership meetings so that each meeting is more affordable. This gives everyone the opportunity to attend each month and receive all of the educational and networking opportunities available within the Harrisburg Chapter. Also this month, as part of our Community Service Committee activities, our chapter will donate $10 for every member that attended December’s Membership meeting to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. What a wonderful way to help those in need in our community! Personally, as many of you already know, I welcomed another grandchild into the world on th December 16 . “Alex James Martin” is a beautiful and healthy baby boy born to my daughter Janet and her husband Jordon. Alex will now be a part of one of the craziest (but truly loving) families around – mine!  I am very blessed to have my family and friends close by so that we are able to spend not only the holidays together, but, many family functions together. For that, I will always be grateful. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukah, or Ramadan during this season of the year; I hope you can slow down just a bit and enjoy what the season has to offer. My wish is that you are surrounded with love, filled with peace and experience great joy over the holiday season. Merry Christmas to you and to each of your families! Be safe and see you new year!

Pam Pam Neubaum, CAP-OM 2014-15 Harrisburg Chapter President

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I’m excited to announce that in early 2015 IAAP will offer a member-only mentoring program that spans the entire association. We heard from you in focus groups, working groups, and survey data that this was an element you wanted to see the association provide. If any of you are familiar with online dating sites, Mentor Match will work in a similar fashion. IAAP is designing an online template right now that potential mentors will fill out. This will be a questionnaire that will ask about experiences, job training, education, certifications, location, and similar information. From this data a profile of the mentor will be created in a database. Someone looking to be mentored will go into Mentor Match and check boxes of what they’re looking for in a mentor. It could be someone who wants a mentor that will meet face-to-face in his or her city. Or, virtual mentoring might be just fine. Maybe someone needs help and pointers because they took on a new job in the field of educational support, having been in the medical field for the last 15 years. It could be that someone who’s been an administrative professional for 40 years is looking for training in social networking. The member looking for a mentor can specify what they need and narrow the fields to only get the matches they want. We’ll offer the option for cross mentoring as well. After the mentee fills out all the fields they’ll get a list of potential mentors to choose from. They then contact the person that best fits their needs and the two will work out time, meeting locations and topics to discuss between themselves. IAAP will offer guidelines and user guides to help you make this an enriching experience. I’ve been involved in mentoring for years. I’ve learned through cross mentoring and training others, so I’ve been on both sides of the desk. IAAP already has thousands of wonderful mentors—our seasoned members who have so much to offer someone starting out in the profession. On the other hand, our younger members can help seasoned members improve their skills just as well. It’s never too late to learn something new. This is just one of the offerings the Revitalized IAAP is bringing to members. Plan now to participate. More information will be coming in early January. Mentor Match is just one more way to connect, learn, lead, and excel. As you go through the holiday season, I wish you warm memories, good health, and a New Year filled with excitement for the future!

Antoinette Smith, CAP-OM IAAP President

Hello Pennsylvania Division Members: I hope this finds you all well fed from Thanksgiving turkey and that your holiday was filled with joy and laughter. Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite time of the year because it is the only holiday that is only about family (and food, of course)!! I trust that you have all been keeping up on the announcements from headquarters about the Branch Manager applications, the LAN applications and the Governance & Leadership Committee Member applications – all really great leadership and volunteer opportunities that are out there for all of us to take advantage of. Also, it has been announced that IAAP Board of Director candidate nominations will open on April 1, 2015 – this is YOUR IAAP – get involved! The Division had successful Fall Education Conferences, East and West in October and the education opportunities just keep on coming. I have some really exciting 2015 opportunities to announce. 

Harrisburg Chapter Members, When I heard that the Chapter had decided to honor Jeanne Spitler with flowers to celebrate her long tenure as a Harrisburg Chapter member, I contacted Pam to ask if I could deliver them to Jeanne personally. I am happy to report that on Friday, December 12th I delivered the flowers and when I tell you that they made her day, that is an understatement - she cried tears of joy and they were delivered on a day that - in her words "was the lowest she had ever felt - even when her husband died". She asked me to let you all know that she very much appreciates the thoughtfulness. I, as I'm sure many of you, had wondered how much, if anything, she knew about the changes taking place within the association and, to my surprise, she brought the subject up during our visit. She said she was dismayed to learn of the changes, but that she understood the need for us to keep up with the times and technology and the need to attract younger members - profound thoughts coming from a 92 year old woman. As you can imagine, her health is failing - she doesn't move very fast, she can't hear worth a bean (I let her do most of the talking) and she has lost the sight in her right eye but she is as sharp as ever, still has very strong opinions and is currently in a struggle with the management where she lives to stay in her apartment (there is talk of moving her to assisted living). My money is on Jeanne to win that fight, but we'll see. I spent almost 2 hours with her and the time flew. That could have something to do with the fact that in addition to the flowers, I also brought along a bottle of wine and chocolates (both of which we opened and enjoyed). I have attached a picture of Jeanne with her flowers, wine and chocolate (on her knee). Debra S. Feinberg, CAP-OM-TA
