A Rich Texas History Down The Street… The town of Tehuacana has one of the five remaining post offices from the Texas Revolution, which was called Tewockony Springs in 1847 - named after springs that had been named after the local Tawakoni Indians. The post office was renamed in 1869 after it reopened after a closing brought upon by the Civil War. At the time Texas was naming a capital, John Boyd, a member of the first and second congresses of the Republic of Texas, proposed it as a site for the capital of Texas. He lobbied extensively and Tehuacana only lost to Austin by a slim majority.

John Boyd gave 1,100 acres and a cash donation for the founding of Trinity University. The campus, located in the center of town, boasts the enormous, four-story limestone administration building built in 1860. A vista of five counties could be seen from the bell tower.

In 1869, he persuaded the Cumberland Presbyterian Church to make Tehuacana the site of Trinity University. By the mid1880s Tehuacana had three churches, two gristmills and cotton gins, and 500 residents.
