Smartphones Break More Often Than You Would Think – Here’s What You Can Do to Bring Your Mobile Back to Life By Robert Aderan More than one out of ten smartphone owners experience this situation every year: Your phone doesn’t power on or you drop it and you don't have your device insured. But don't panic! Almost any damage can be repaired – whether it is in or out of warranty. Here's our overview how to bring your smartphone back to life. We depend on our smartphones and we can’t live without them. Our customer care study has confirmed: People are addicted to their mobile devices – no matter where they live, who they are and what they do. Let’s take India as an example where 98 percent sleep with their phone. People in Brazil spend more than 5 hours per day on their smartphone. And Millennials use their mobile device for almost two hours daily only for text messaging. Any disruption to our digital life causes a serious issue – but unfortunately, smartphones break more often than you would think. Yearly 600 Million Smartphone Repairs Expected by 2020 How often things go wrong depends on a lot of conditions. Weather conditions, for example, have a significant impact on the likelihood of whether your device fails or not. Return rates vary globally: While one out of four smartphone owners, who we surveyed in the US, in Germany and in Brazil, had used a repair service, one third in India and even more than half of Chinese users took their mobile phone for repair. With an estimated average return rate of 10 percent and 6 billion smartphones in use by 2020, we’re talking about 600 million repairs every year. The good news is that almost any damage can be repaired and many issues with your device will in fact be covered under warranty. This was the case for 54% of all mobile device owners B2X Care Solutions | Baierbrunnerstr. 35 | 81379 Munich | Tel. + 49-89-45253-0 | [email protected]

we’ve interviewed about their service experience. The Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty is a guarantee by the manufacturer of your device who will take care of repairing your smartphone in case something is wrong with it, presuming normal use of the phone. Warranty Covers Many Issues But Isn’t a Lifesaver When purchasing a smartphone, most people don’t really know what’s covered under the manufacturer’s warranty and how long it lasts. In most cases, your smartphone carries a 1-2 year manufacturer’s warranty. Many mobile phone manufacturers have understood that service is an important differentiator for their brand and they focus on delivering a great customer experience. Some of the typical faults covered under warranty include software problems, for example when your phone freezes or when touch functions don’t work. Also when your device does not turn on, this is normally covered under warranty as long as there are no signs of physical damage. Many users experience that their device keeps crashing – corrupt software is normally also covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Yet there are many issues that aren’t such as:    

Cracked screens or damaged components as a result of dropping your phone. Wear and tear as a result of putting your phone in the same place as keys and coins. Water damage as a result of letting your phone get in contact with any liquid substance. Jailbreaking (iPhones) and Rooting (the Android equivalent of Jailbreaking).

In case the issue is covered under warranty, you should take the device to the shop where you purchased it or an authorized service provider. Your phone will be either exchanged for an equivalent device or you will be given a loaner phone while your device is being repaired within 2-5 days. What should you do in case of a non-warranty issue? Certified Service Center Will Get Non-Warranty Damages Fixed The most common out-of-warranty issues are cracked screens accounting for more than half of all non-warranty issues. The easiest way to get a new display for your smartphone is visiting a repair shop around the corner. But be careful: Since the number of repair shops has grown dramatically over the past years, you should select a shop that is certified by your smartphone brand. Otherwise you may lose your warranty guarantee if the device is still under warranty. Many smartphone brands have in the meantime established their own network of repair shops. In fact, B2X helps many manufacturers establish a walk-in repair service for their brand powered by its SMARTBAR solution. While there is a great choice of repair services in bigger cities, smartphone owners who live on the countryside may not have a repair shop around the corner. Many service providers offer repair services online or mail in options, saving you the time and hassle of having to go to the shop yourself. Summary: Smartphones are fragile devices and break more often that you would think. We estimate a yearly repair volume of 600 million by 2020. While more than 50 percent of all issues are covered under the manufacturer’s warranty, certified repair shops are your trusted destination for non-warranty issues like cracked screens or water damage.
