Become a Trip Leader

We have a great staff of student trip leaders who are committed to keeping outdoor adventure alive at smith! Our belief is that a full and active outdoor lifestyle leads to healthy, happy and productive people. The goal is to provide a huge variety of fun activities that will get you outside, playing hard and learning new skills along the way. If you are interested in becoming a student leader, contact us for more information on how to participate in our spring training! Many of our leaders help welcome new students at Fall orientation, but then continue leading trips during the year as part of their campus work-study. ~Lead a 2018 orientation group ~ Attend outdoor skills workshops ~ Wilderness First Aid certification ~ Leadership experience ~ Work-study positions ~ Challenge yourself ~ Make new friends!

Weekly Ski and Snowboarding: We’ll be heading up to Berkshire East Ski Area (aka The Beast) every Thursday for a 5-9pm night ski session. Tickets are all only $18/person! Rentals and lessons are also discounted. Meet at Sage hall at 4:00pm. Arrive early to get a seat in van. No pre-registration.

February 4, 17 & March 3 Snowshoe Trips – Explore New England’s forests on snowshoes. We’ll go snowshoeing around some beautiful hills and forests just a ½ hour away. We’ll leave Boathouse at 11 a.m. and return by 2 or 3 pm

TRIP SCHEDULE

February 10 & 25- Cross Country Ski trips: Experience New England at a Cross country skiers pace. Includes a lesson then fun trail tour. We’ll leave Boathouse at 11 a.m. and return by 2/3 pm. *Please specify shoe size when registering.

v February 11, 18 & 24- Ice Skating tripIf its nice outside we’ll visit one of the local outdoor rinks (free). If it’s very cold or snowy, we will travel one of the local indoor rinks ($5 fee/person). We have skates to lend first come first serve. 12-4pm (meet at Boathouse)

v Weekly hikes Resume!! Every Tuesday in April from 4:30-6:30pm we lead local hikes on the Holyoke Range-Leaving from Boathouse-no registration. v April 20-21- Macleish Camping Overnight- Head out into the Hilltowns for a overnight camping trip at our new Adirondack shelter at the Macleish field station. We’ll supply warm sleeping bags and other camping gear. This is a really fun trip for those looking to get off campus for a night. Leaves Friday evening and returns Saturday mid-morning. So plenty of time for other plans!!

SPECIAL EVENTS v February 7 Ski & snowboard tuning clinic: Boathouse 4:30-6pm. Bring your downhill skis or snowboard and learn how to repair bases, sharpen edges and wax-free! v March 6 Indoor climbing competition: 1-4pm, Free-all abilities welcome Smith climbing wall. Self-select your category-beginner, intermediate or advanced. v Indoor kayak pool sessions will be

held on two Friday nights on February 23 & March 2 from 6-8pm. Learn paddle strokes, rolling and more.

CLIMBING WALL HOURS: Tues/Thurs 4-6pm, Wed. 7-9pm, Friday 3-6pm, Sunday 1-4pm Belay clinics & Testing: Tues. 4-6pm & Friday 3-6pm Check out the Climbing wall in the Ainsworth Gym Fitness Studio! Shoes and harnesses are available for free. Climbers must pass a belay test to use the ropes on their own. Don’t know how to climb or just want to try it? No problem! Come to an open clinic hour and we’ll teach you. *Guests welcome

OPEN BOATHOUSE HOURS: M-F 3-6 pm. Sat & Sun 1-5 pm The Paradise Pond Boathouse will be open to the Smith College community September, & October, then again after Spring break. No experience is required (just an ID) to use a kayak, canoe or SUP (standup paddle board). Basic instruction provided. *On campus use only/Guests welcome
