HISTORY

REDEVELOPMENT

Campbell Camilllus Snowdon settled in Calgary around 1907 and became a wholesale refiner, manufacturer and importer of oils. He bought this property in two purchases between 1910 and 1912, and the building was constructed in phases between 1911 and 1914. By September 1914 two brick additions had been built, first an oil and grease warehouse on the south side of the building, and then a garage and office at the building’s northwest corner. A further addition was made in 1952.

In 2005, an historic photo of Snowdon Block was featured on the Alberta Centennial stamp, issued by Canada Post. C.C. Snowdon soon established branches in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton and Vancouver, and as far afield as Toronto and Montreal. Snowdon’s operations included refining, manufacturing and importing oils, greases, coal oil, gasoline, paints, disinfectants, chemicals, cotton waste, boiler compounds, hotel specialties, and soaps and polishes. Snowdon developed a variety of oils, paints, disinfectants and cleaners. Snowdon’s brothers Herbert and Gordon worked for C.C. Snowdon Oils, but during the 1920’s they left and set up a rival firm, the Pyramid Oil & Refining Company. By the 1930s Pyramid Oil closed, and both brothers returned to work for C.C. Snowdon. After Snowdon’s death in 1935, his family retained ownership of the business for many years, and incorporated the company in 1958. The family sold the business in the 1960s, and it became a subsidiary of Liberty Holding & Industries Ltd. By the late 1970s the Snowdon name had disappeared. The C.C. Snowdon building was vacant for about 1983 to 1987. The warehouse was seriously damaged by fire in February, 1988, leaving little more than a burnt-out shell. The office portion remained usable, and has housed a series of tenants, including antique and piano dealers and the Calgary biker church. Source: Heritage Property Corporation

Concept

The historic fabric (the original brick façade, intact portions of office and retail, historic wood windows and doors, interior brick character walls, and historic ghost sign) are all to be sensitively restored. Three brand new floors of office will be created within a damaged portion of the historic structure – complete with all new electrical, mechanical, modern lobby, and elevator.
